I'm heading up to the north fork stanislaus river with lilwhippersnapper this weekend. Anyone ever fish up there around the town of dorrington, Sougrass crossing, or boards crossing ? I know the south and middle forks well, but this will be my first time fishing the north fork. This will most likely be it until spring time so i'm hoping this will be a good one. After last weekend I am totally disgusted and wiull not hit putah again till it closes to bait dunkers. Any info. is greatly appreciated.
I've fished it a couple of times. I don't know anything about towns. I've only fished near Camp Wolfeboro, a Boy Scout Camp. There are some nice browns and rainbows in there. Get away from people and you will find more fish. You'll find bigger fish as well.

I like to get away from the crowds to find the bigger fish. Every once in a while I get lucky and find big fish in the holes where everybody else fishes.

hey jt i know those holes as well. they are great for those 5 lb pigs. hahaha. and you know that every damn bait dunker out there fishes the same spot. man the look on those bait guys eyes when i brought in the 5 lber within 10 minutes of me being at that hole after i landed the fish and let it go, they took off. loved it

My last trip to Big Trees (son likes the North Grove Trail) and Boards Crossing (a few weeks back), smaller nymphs/flymphs had to hit the fish on the nose. Very little bug activity. The dry/dropper rig that experiened high catch rates during the summer months was not as effective. Very similar results below Clarks Fork the following weekend. Beautiful, low water, but no crowds...I made a mistake on the North Fork by not wearing fleece under my waders!
DreamFlows listed Avery at 52 degrees around 4:00 this afternoon. If you've not fished Hwy. 4 corridor between Arnold and Alpine, this might be a good opportunity to scout the area and wet your line. Beware the weather even if the forcast gives promising outlook...

I'd love to get into a steelhead but I want to hit the tri nity and its to far for a one night trip. Thats a nice brown Matt, Mind tellin us what river coughed that up ? Hell lets get some people together and go steelhead fishin.

Dude I know that was the Truckee!! I am totally down to do the Trinity next weekend, I'll just need to pick up some flies and stuff. Any suggestions on what to bring in terms of flies, leaders, and tippet? chuck

I'm in... All I do is fish. Monday thru Thursday is work and school, Friday and saturday is fish day, and sunday I sleep or fish, but I can take anyday off from work.
Dropping down to the Stan. from Dorrington has some great water. Just after you cross the river on Boards Crossing Rd., there is a day picnic area. A 4X4 trail will take you up the river several miles along the river. The water near the bridge holds a lot of planters (at least during the summer). About a 2 mile walk takes you to some real nice water for nymphing (hares ear was the best for natives and planters, both browns and bows). Didn't catch any fish of noteable size, but a lot in the 10-13" range. I understand that the water gets better and the fish more plentiful the further up one goes. There area also some good runs that look good for streamers though I did not have any luck (didn't try it as much as I should have either). I am also told that taking the first right turn after the bridge takes you to some good water downstream.
Hey Captain, please let me know how you did. I will be staying in Dorrington for a couple of days this upcoming weekend. Though it will be for my wife's B-day, I might try and sneak out early one morning for a few. I'm hoping there may be some decent action this time of year within a short walk as I'll have to hit it quick.
I was there with captain, and it was slow... I only caught three fish all weekend, and lost about 4. I found most the fish were in the slow water. Got my first ever brookie though.

It's always fun to go fishing in the sierra's even if the fishing was very slow. It was a lesson in super spooky trout ! One bad cast, a shadow on the water and they were long gone, Absolutly no room for error. The spots that held fish were long slow sections, Alot like a spring creek. The water was very low, gin clear, and the sun was bright, Made for tough fishing. Oh and it was freakin cold at night and the morning, Lilwhippersnapper didn't mention the part were are wading boots were frozen solid in the morning, was like 28 degrees at 9 a.m, Had to thaw em by the fire and pour hot water over em. I will say that it is a bueatiful river. Hey Eric we should have packed up early sunday and went the 11 miles up the road to mosquito lakes but hind site is 20/20. Yeah Brian we gotta get one more trip in before it starts snowing in the mountains. Dumbpig, We ended up fishing further up river at the stanislaus river campground, The water was quit a bit lower then it was at dorrington, But the campground gate was locked so we had to head up river to another spot. May have did better at dorrington.
Brian, it was a brookie, not a brown...By the way, we only saw 2 cased caddis the whole time out there, and they were in the tent. Yeah, we should have went to that lake, but oh well, we'll get em next time... Did you see the flows for putah, they went up a little.
