I got back from a tough weekend up in Truckee late yesterday evening, man did I get my butt kicked!! I fished for 12 hours straight on sunday only managing four fish up to 8inches!!! I could blame the conditions if they weren't absolutlely pleasant, or my fly selection if I hadn't gone out and spent sixty bucks on flies the day before, but alas I have no excuses. The Truckee is fishing great right now but I couldn't buy a bite... go figure. The bwo's and some other larger mayflies were all over and I saw some october caddis in the evening which was cool. I'll be trying some of those out next weekend up there. I also picked up a nice 13" brown out of one of the feeder creeks that munched the nymph on a dry/dropper setup which was fun. Overall I had a great time but left feeling a bit overwhelmed. Even a smaller river like the Truckee seems huge and imposing compared to the smaller creeks I usually have success on. Its gonna be a while before I have the confidence and experience neccessary to pull hogs out there I can tell. chuck

Fishing isnt about catching fish, its not about who caught the most, or who caught the biggest, its about the experience that you have on the water, and the life long bonds you make with others on the journey to becoming a better person inside.
Hi Chuck, If you haven't already stop in at the Truckee River Outfitters, they've given me real good advice that helped me on the river. They're dialed into the current conditions and what's working, what's not. Chat it up, ask lots of questions. Good folk. The Truckee is no push-over so don't feel bad. It's a bit of a strange river because the flows are managed. For instance, last summer when all the flows were down everywhere else in the Siera they were actually pretty robust in the Truckee. They opened up the gates a bit on Tahoe because they couldn't get enough water out of other reservoirs in the system to meet a mandated flow requirements at gauging stations further downstream. Also, it tends to run much warmer than other waters because the flows come off the top of lake Tahoe and not so much from snow melt, or aquifers, or the bottoms of reservoirs.
You gotta put your time in there. I have just recently started doing well this year, after all the years of frustration.
Caught lots on PMD dries in the early summer. Lots from 18-22 Inches. Even a 21" brown. It was crazy because most of the Truckee fish eat below the surface.
