well were do i start.

got my new redington yesterday in the mail. and eric got his flies, so knew we would have a decent day.

went to a spot that jl told me about, def a lil walk to get back there, but can see why its soooo good. had a few on think about 4 all popped off, lilwhippersnapper, ERIC, also hooked into, what was it eric like 3, anyways fished that a lil bit, nothing great, got my waders, thanks captain, need to put some seam sealer before my next trip. so walk upstream then decide to cross get back up to the road and move downstream, and to no success nothing. so back we go to the car to move to the place where i slay the fish. got back to the car and couldnt find my darn keys, the only spot i touched them was at the last spot, so went back down there, and i was never happier to see moss and seaweed, it save my keys from possibly going bye bye, or atleast to were i would have to get greatly wet. so back up to the zztop 28, as jl would put it, hahaha, and to the bridge we go.

well got there and worked the 4 rips that are below the bridge eric i think hooked into 2 at that spot and me 1,

my fly choices of the day. JT CAN GUESS THIS ONE. yup jt specials for 90% of the day.
#18 bwo nymph and a #22 black drowned midge, did use a different #1 fly will get to that later, but my dropper all day was the midge. the trusted and well proven, as you will see when you read one.

did i mention that it was a great day. well it was.

so after the rips slowly worked up the the bridge, again hooking but never keeping them on, couldnt figure it out, eric same thing, he then moved up just above the bridge, and was doing pretty good, hooked a few landed a few, not to many stockers on the ones the we did catch which is always a great day, and not to many bait chunkers. so after i seen him doing ok right above almost under the bridge i moved up, first cast bam, 10"er native, landed, that works, moved a lil closer to the middle of the creek, GOD I LOVE WADERS, i got everywhere with them, so got to the middle, first cast bam, hooked into about 13-14"er, popped off, gave those a few more minutes with nothing else, then moved to the same hole that eric was fishing, him and those twig fish, he was killin them, and later in the day i had my far share as well, so in that hole he hooked a few and landed 1or2, i hooked into 3, and all popped off, one being a nice 15-16"er, oh well, cant complain so far right, atleast i have landed 1 so far.

so onto the spot that me and jt rocked them the previous week, got there and ofcourse bait chunkers, oh well the will get over it, was there for about 5 mins, then eric shows up, sh-t you not, second cast after he should up, BAM, hooked one, thought he was small until he did the RAIN DANCE, and i almost **** myself, and almost fell down. want to give a special thanks to jt for all the advise and knowledge that he has given me on the water, worship.gif

everything that you have taught me i used on this fish, between the reeling up the slack line, yes jt i used that lil slap reel method, to the settin downstream to even watchin you fight the big fishies, all from you, so thank you, but, i will have to say that i am sorry, because this fish puts the one that you caught with me to shame, hahaha, by far the biggest baddest and fattest fish that i have ever seen come off this river or even in pics, which i took, but have 20 more pics to take, anyways back to the fight, he did 3 or 4 of his now you see me now you donts aka(i call them rain dances) did his i am stayin in the currents, which i couldnt budge him when he did that, just kept the tight line on him, this whole time that i am fighting this PIG, eric and the bait chunkers are having to pick up the jaws, even the ones across the river, jawdrop.gif

mind you we had no net, so after MANY of his bad ass head shakes that not only you can feel, but just the site of them is amazing, he flipped a bitch from heading upstream to start a fire with my drag down stream, i thought i was gonna loose him, man my new redington and my wrist got a bomb ass work out, i have had a few big ones on but never this big, so he is down stream, SIDEWAYS, so not tryin to put to much pressure on him, did my sideways stance with my rod parallel with the water and proceded to turn him, with every tug i did, he tugged harder, lookin around i thought i was gonna loose this beast, and also no one else was fishing, which was great, then all of a sudden its like he gave up, so reel reel reel, and tellin myself in my head, keep pressure, wait wait, not to much, easy easy, you know all you guys have done it and still do, so finally starting to gain ground, he did 1 or 2 more little but strong runs, and finally i worked myself up the flat bottom rocks and told eric the first chance you get grab that hog, and, then he did one more run straight to the weeds, and i was like no no beetch time for you to lay down, in the best scareface impression that i know, and then pulled him right back in, eric was right there ready to grab him, if it wasnt for him, probably never would have got him, thanks eric anytime you wanna roll with you know what to do. again thanks so much, teamwork.gif

so eric had him, then i took him over to admire such a beautiful creature, we took a few pics, showed everyone around, i was hootin and a yellin up a storm, i was sooooo stoked, it was my time to shine and it finally happened, my first PUTAH PIG, so i took a few pics, did a quick messure job on my rod, so i can messure it when i get home, (first guide to the middle of my cork handle, how big you ask, not yet, so put the fatty girl back into the water, the prettiest fish i ever seen in my life, beautiful reds, browns, black spots, i mean everything about this fish was perfect, not a blemmish on her, and then let he go back to what she does best, so i then and did some more yelling and hoolering, and little kids stuff, you know when you caught that big ol fish with your pops or grandpops, and you would be dancing and a singing, pretty much ACTING A FOOL, ya that was me, had a nice crowd across the way, someone talkin about did he let it go or keep it, and ofcourse i yelled out i put her back, (i am in it for the love and sport not food), and then i heard something about man those would have been some nice steaks, that pissed me off, then i turn around and the bait chunkers was leavin, probably cuz i said that you catch a fish like this on bait, but what ever. i had a blast, so, back to the fishing, i not only caught that big one, but then within 45 minutes i caught 4 more luckers from 15-18"ers, all in the same spot on the same fly, and the chunkers across they way are, another one, and i was like yup another one, took a few more pics, and sent them on there way as well, didnt get one pic cuz it did the infamous JL FISHY SHUFFLE, you know those that dont like pics and flip out the way, well this one flipped into the pool behind me, then me tryin to get it made it all mucky and couldnt see the fish, before i left i didnt see the fish in there, so found its way home, all in all a great day, eric missed a ton of fish, and did myself, i had 2 other large pigs on over 20 inches that i missed, all on the jt special but for one of those 15-18"er it hit my first fly yes the first one which i was using at that time a

and so left that spot moved more upstream not much there saw a lot of fish, big fish swimmin around but couldnt get them to swing at it, but i did get to get dunked into the water, yup ladies and gents, i fell into the water, up to mid chest, just above the waders to were i could feel a little bit of wetness, after that went back to the car to charge up dry off, had my subway samich, that i brought with me, then back to the bridge, caught a few 10-13"ers, and figured why not go back to the spot i had the big ones at before, got back up there, meet a cool ass dude, by the name of MATT R, nice meetin you bro, have to get together some time, and hit um hard like we did yesterday, and at that spot he was killin um like me, dont know how many fish he hooked but everytime the broke him off, well i landed one fish out of that place nice lil 13 in native then i called it a day, which by any standers, if i didnt fly fish the rest of this yr i would be a happy man, but we all know that aint gonna happen, so all in all a great day, i think i caught 1 planter throughout the whole day, all the others was native, and that is even a better day,

so to end this segment of brians blessed day, got the skunk of my new rod, and new used reel, waiting for my new new reel to be in the mail, maybe get it monday, and my st croix to come back, and gonna head out to the river again, and see if i could pull a pig up from the depths again.

GOD I LOVE PUTAH
headbang.gif

almost for got to tell you how big it was, had to come in and edit it, hahaha

24 inches at about 4 lbs, lbs i am guessing about, but the 24 inches is on the button, well on my rod

Brian,
It's good to hear you had a good day.  It always seems a new rod brings good luck.  At least that's been the case with me.

Brian,
I've had streaks where I've caught nice fish each time out, but I've also had streaks where I couldn't catch a fish to save my life.  It makes you more appreciative of the good days.  By the way, how did the new rod cast?  I'm sure it was a lot better than the telephone pole you were using last week.  We'll have to hook up again soon.

Brian - don't wait to print those pics.  you're keeping us all in the dark.  develop the film and upload the pics!

Glad you had a good day.  Nice to hook some fattys and even better to land them.  I've lost every nice fish I've hooked this year.   Looks like you could give me a lesson.

That's right.  Take that film down and get it developed.  Also, if you get the pictures put on a CD you'll be able to upload them easier.

good huntings

JL, you are such a jokester, me teach you ha, i have a long wait ahead of me until i can teach you a think or 2, atleast you can catch them in other spots than in the bridge area, i just think that i dont fish there long enough, by 8-9 am i am at the bridge crankin um out, so i might have to stick with you one day in the am, just to fish a new spot and get familiar with it, the more the spot gets fished the harder it is, so when every you are available let me know and ill take it off.

That was a great day huh Brian. I was honored to be able to hold such a pig. Glad to hear your native fish that you stocked in your little pond was able to find it's way home. lol. I know you told everyone how you were loud and proud, but don't forget to tell them you woke up the whole campground. You were so loud I think you started a new hatch.lol.

It was great fishing with you...we'll fo sho do it again.

Oh yeah, I fished 5 on the way out. I caught 2 right away on the nymph. Then they were jumping like crazy, so I switched to a dry. Caught three on a BWO dry. One was a 12 native, one 8 inch planter, and FINALLY, I got that one for the road. A great NATIVE that went at a measurement of 3 inches

hey chuck ill be out there on friday, and as far as carson just let me know, i got waders now, so good to go, you pick the day and ill get it off, only thing, wont have the explorer, so might have to walk a lil farther than before.

just let me know i am always ready for carson. thinkin after the 20th, ill have my st croix back, and will 2 decent set up to go up to carson with like we did. keep in touch, and let me know about this friday.

one more thing as far as carson goes been keepin an eye on it, flows are at 45, so the same when we fished it before, i am thinking the next storm that comes through which will be very soon, will set up the river, with flows in the 60s-70s after a week of ran, that will be the time to hit up the carson and the trophy section like we did. and this time no holding back, remember flows 60-70 and we are good to go for sure

Way to go Brian! I never made it out there last weekend, too much work around the house and now I'm regretting it. Get that film developed and get those pics posted!

I woulnd't be surprised if that 24" was heavier than 4lb. I caught & kept a nice healthy rainbow out of Lake Tahoe that was 22" and weighed in on a reliable scale at 4lbs, your fish was a lot bigger than that one.

well i guessed on the weight, i catch many small mouth that are around this size in new york so i just guess, have caught a few large and smallies out here this size but not to many, but she was really fat and felt about 4 lbs, ill get pics up sometime soon, after this friday trip ill get them developed and posted

There is a nice little table on Ralph Cutters website that gives weight by a ratio of girth and length.

good little website, only problem didnt messure the girth, ill bring a tape messure with me from now on, i do know this the fish was stupid fat, so 4 lbs might have been on the light side, they are sayin a 24" fish with a girth of 14" is about 5.9 lbs and a girth of 12" is 4.3 so i will truly never know, but somewhere in betwen those numbers, i do know this it was much fatter than the top part of my forearm,, and thats about 12"s around, so i would say its in the 12-16 inch girth mark, now i really need to get pics up just so you can see it. man i wish i messured the girth now. i will next time, but now i see it could have been closer to 5, i know this was a really fat fish, and i just said for cuz it felt pretty hefty to me. and i catch a lot of bass during spring before the spawn, and this fish was just as fat as some of those bass i catch

Brian,
I measured the size of my two hands put together as open as I could as though I were holding the fish around the belly. Then, when I hold the fish.....ever so gently and with wet hands, I have a general idea. Hope you get a chance to try that on another pig. I am off right now. This overcast sky looks very inviting. I should be on the river fishing by 3:00-3:30
