On Saturday I was fishing on the far side of the creek and thought I was seeing double. I hooked a fat fish and almost had the fish to net but he decided that he would hold in the current. I was watching the fish in the clear water and there was an almost identical image in the current. Both fish were 18 to 20 inchers. Needless to say the fish took off back out into the middle of the creek and said seeya. The fish must be in pre spawn. I think the fish are on steroids, they are now the strongest I have seen them all year.
Check out that bulging belly! The fish have been eating well. The bigger wild fish put on some serious weight this summer. It will go away when they start to spawn. Everyone talks about how good it gets in the winter, but I'd say now is the best time. It's a little harder to find fish, but they're fatter and fight way better. Otter, nice fish.

Both fish weren't hooked only one. I just thought it was really cool to actually see one fish following another fish even with a hook in its jaw. The two were obviously a breeding pair. It was like watching a TV show in real life. I have opened up a few fish from Putah and the stomach contents seem to be mostly aquatic plants and snails(Bigger snails than the New Zealand Snails). I have watched some of these fish swim through the weed beds. They just plow through and pick off whatever they see with their mouth open.
Last fall on the Middle Stan I noticed the same thing with some nice browns, wish it were like that all the time. Even last summer on the Truckee I brought in about an average rainbow after a few minutes of play and another rainbow followed it out of the depths to just a few feet from shore. I thought it interesting since it wasn't anywhere near spawning season. Maybe if the fish don't spook they get charged up to see if there's some food they should be competing for. When the second fish hits on a rare double hook up it may be thinking it's scooping the other guys dinner.
With any luck I'll make it up to Putah on Friday or Saturday, I'll be in a gold 4Runner with bike racks and wearing a broad rimmed hat. Say hey.
hey windknots i will be up at putah tomorrow, 97 red z28 camaro black hard top, ill be wearing a black baseball cap,

Smallmouth and largemouth bass do that all the time. You'll hook one and two or three others some times will swim along with it trying to get a piece of the action. Little do they know it isn't any action they want a piece of. chuck

That's what I want right there. Been waiting for a picture like that to show up. It was only a matter of time as many pigs are being hooked by you guys lately. Very nice fish indeed. My favorite author John Geirach claims to have seen a 25" fish try and eat a black bird off a low hanging limb out in Colorado. I've also heard of very large fish hammering small hooked trout up on the Pit.
Hey Brian - I may be up there in the later morning, early afternoon. I drive a silver saturn v6 with tinted windows... i'll look for your zztop z28. Just be sure to have lots of chicks getting out with fuzzy pink leg warmers and short jean skirts.
Oh - and don't fall down in the creek and break your new rod!
As lil whippersnapper stated a client of mine who never flyfished before landed 2 fish at the same time, both about 10-12 inches one a planter and one a native it was pretty cool. That has only happened to me one time @ the Owens River many moons ago.By the way that is one FAT FREAKIN FISH!!! Bono
I've caught two 18 inch stripers at the same time, That was quit a fight. That fish is a freak of nature ! Few months ago i caught a putah trout that was bulging like that, I kept it, and it was full of mud.
