I fished the Truckee for three days over my birthday weekend. It was an awesome time. I caught a ton of fish although I didn't land any really big ones. My best was about 16" rainbow that absolutely mauled a big #4 bunny leech as I stripped it behind a rock in about 10" of water. That was fun! Got the rest on #16 poxyback hare's ear (thanks Matt for the tip) and also on a #18 soft hackle fished like a regular nymph under an indicator. I was hoping on landing a 23" brown for my 23rd b'day but that was wishful thinking. The only brown I landed was about 3" so I guess I'm still a baby on river time. I did however get a huge 20" brown to give my hopper/dropper a kiss that sent my heart into my throught. Just seeing that fish was enough for a happy birthday! I got some cool pics of fishing in the snow which I have never done before. My best day was after the cold snap. They must have liked the cooler temps cuz I couldn't keep them off my line. Going back in a couple of weeks to work on that 23" brown! ha! Charlie

man that so sucks, at least you know he is there, and that you had a chance, as far as friday morning i am doing a full day with lilwhippersnapper, so let me know, i am hoppin to get a hold of captain to pick up those waders, i did wet wading on sunday, and its a lil chilly in the morning so dont think ill do that again unless i have to. but ya give me a call or something, hoping that i get my redington in the mail thursday so i can use it on friday, we shall see

If you're heading back up to the Truckee try dead drifting some cray fish patterns, I had some nice action fishing them with my nephew back in July. We had some nice ones get away, biggest I managed to get in was a modest 16" rainbow. One evening I was fishing a dry caddis pattern and had a 9" brown leap out of the water and take the fly right out of the air before it even hit the surface. Crazy fish, I'm watching the fly settle down towards the water and the next thing I know there's a mouth flying up out of the water and snags it mid-air.
Two summers ago I was nymphing on the Truckee below squaw, had a hit, and then as I was pulling my line up for another go a ginormous trout somewhere north of 28" swam right by my waders. I'd like to think that fish was what hit my fly, I'll never know for sure. This summer I was down in the Glenshire district moving from one spot to the next sticking close to the shore in the shallow, stagnant water trying to be stealthy. I ended up spooking a nice 20+ inch brown that had been hanging out underneath a rock that was absolutely the last place in the world that you would ever expect to find a fish, and this was midday. The big browns seem to have their own set of rules.
I was in Truckee this weekend at the Reno Outfitters shop and they told me that this is the first year there will be year round fishing on the river.
Chuck how close is the river to downtown? I had a cool idea on a trip. Take the train from Suisun City to Truckee stay at one of the old hotels downtown and fish for a few days. Dont know if Ill do it this winter but might be a cool spring/summer trip...
You could definitely pull that off, the Truckee flows right through the center of town. Not sure where the hotels are though. The Truckee River Outfitters is right on that same stretch, stop in there or give them a call and they'll help hook you up. I got some great tips from them this summer, real good folks in there.
Cool good deal, the Truckee Hotel is accross the street from the train station. I just wanted to make sure you could fish in the the strech of river close to town. If you can everything is all within a couple of blocks. Would be a cool trip....
You can fish through town for sure but supposedly it is pressured pretty hard. Although I think that is true for most of the Truckee. Most of the really good fishing starts just below Truckee and goes on till the state line. chuck
