Just fished the Truckee for 3 days. Best fishing was am hours. Decent hatches going off throughout the morning. Getting cold up there at night, feels good in the morning to fish in temps in the 30's. Fished alot of water, fished alot of hours, caught alot of hard fight energetic wild trout. landed atleast 25 fish up to 20". lost 2 others that were even bigger one of which was huge. lost and missed many many more. caught alot of fat 12-14"ers. man those fish have some spunk in them, they swim so fast all over the place totally out of control its so funny. If you get a chance to go up there do it. Its still a little slow during the heat of the day but that heat is quickly giving way to the shorter days. Which means even better fishing until it gets too cold.
Nice one Matt. I'll be back out there in a minute. Just gotta get through harvest and it's on. I am waiting for this first rain to bust open the river mouth and let the steelies in. Picking up a new rod/reel next week.
JT, As much as I can. Those fish fight hard. I fished it this year 20+ times and am planning on making a couple more trips before winter hits. Its sweet up there this time of year, very few people. Those fish know hard times are coming so it seems they like to eat lots in the fall. Cole I cant wait for steelies
Hey Matt, I have a friend who has a cabin up in Tahoe/Donner, When we go up there I am not sure where to fish as the little Truckee doesnt seem very productive...can you give me a tip on where to go...and how you fish it..it doent seem very deep..Thanks
zpomp lil truckee is tough, especially late in the year but truckee is all good and should be getting better until winter sets in. My favorite thing about the Truckee is you can use all methods of fly fishing. Although I'd say I produce most fish off an indicator with nymphs, I'll always swing a streamer in sections that look good for it. And I will usually catch fish on dries in the summer but that gets a little tricky on these colder evenings. The river up high above truckee is fairly shallow but downstream from town there's plenty of deep holes to hold those big trout. Hope this helps. Check your pm's. Matt
Thanks Matt & JT, Maybe sometime we can use the cabin and you can guide a little fishing trip up there, I fish a bunch up at the Resort as I am a member there, Bono cut my teeth about 3 years ago and Ive been hooked ever since...if you want to fish the resort let me know and we will hook up...<><
Hey zpomp try the little truckee at its headwaters above boca and stampede along the campgrounds rather than between the two lakes where everyone else fishes. The fish are smaller (12" average) but there are more of them and they are easier to fool. I killed them up there on sunken carpenter ants in june. charlie
