Securing Hackle
Permalink

I have just started to try tying my own flies and I have a question about securing hackle.  To start I have been trying to tie a Grant's Gnat.  So far I am able to tie in the hackle at the turn with a few thread wraps.  I then move to wrap the hackle forward just behind the hook eye.  When I get to the eye I whip some thread over the end of the hackle.  At this point should I also wrap back into the hackle moving toward the turn?

If I understand you correctly I would just secure the hacckle at the hook eye.

Sounds about right.  I always turn my hackle under the hook, over the top towards me and my thread over the top away so they are opposite turns.
