8 weight rod, good reel(cork drag), sink tip line, and some white or yellow clousers. Good Luck! Way better with a fly rod!

Thanks for the advice. I just ordered an 8-weight St. Croix on Tuesday. I don't have 8w reel with a cork drag though. I have a Galvan Torque 8 reel. The Galvan doesn't have a cork drag, but it seems pretty heavy duty. I am going to try and get this rig to pull double duty on stripers and Russian River steelhead.

I've caught a 25 pound steal head on my 7 weight rod. Woopie, that was fun pulling.The Galvin reel you have is good, it will work fine. Good Luck!
