this weeks report (also my 1st)

Hey everyone, based on some of your feed back, I will give you my fishing report for the few days that I spend on the water this week.Fishing has been very good for the expert anglers and inspiring for those just getting into the sport.I took a few different freind out with me and all of them saw good numbers of wild fish with a few planters here and there. We even found a few browns during the week.I dont fish the normal stops on the creek at this time of the year.I work hard at getting to the not so easy to reach areas. It takes a lot of hiking to get to most of these spots when the flow wont let you just walk across.Being one of the few people to go through so much effort to get away from the mob of others has its reward and down falls ,posion oak, snakes and a million holes in my waders. On the up side my numbers are always high and I seen to find some of those 20in. fish. I have not seen a 30in fish yet but I have been very, very close.
I could name off a dozen patters you all know, so I wont , but I will say if you get to a spot and feel you are one of the first to fish it in a while due to the higher flows ,dont be a fraid to bust out one of those big flys with the big hook.Mabe big fish arent so picky about their food when they have not had any presure put on them from other anglers...
So my reports not much different from all those we read all week long ,but I got 2 tips for you..

1..fishing is good for the newbies to the sport. So get out there with a freind show them why we love it so much and teach them the right way.(the fun way) Last year I introduced fly fishing to 9 freinds and they are all regulars now.
2..toss something big into the water. big fish eat big food.We put a good number of 20+in. fish in the net this week and did so with more than a dozen different patten that have big hooks..

see ya on the water, mx19

mx great first report.  Its nice fishing for those big ones that havent been pressured. Way to go. Hope to hear a second report soon.  I'm just waiting for a 30"er.  I had one on friday that was gonna go 26"+ easy.  This fish took the fly so subtle on the swing than came up to the surface and all I saw was this huge mouth and a whole lot of fish behind it. Damn fish came up,gave some of the slowest head shakes I've ever seen and turned that hook and threw right back at me.  Oh it was big.

Just when you think you've got it all figured out!

Nice goin.

I parked at dear sign and walked all the way to #3 on sunday.i had to beat my way through the brush, cause i was on the other side.I never saw another person along the way.fished little pockets and pools. When I fish 3/4 of the day I got into 30+ fish but I dont really count so will say thirty-ish.Out of that I had 3 +or-- go 15in and a couple over 20in.
Out of the few days I fished this week that was the only day I fished alone. The other days I brought friends and I didnt do much fishing ,I helped them.We had some good numbers and landed a fish or two over 20in each time out..
I know of a few spots that take little effort to get to.you can find a number of bigger fish there.the fish see a bit more angling presure and they have room to run when you get into one.
I went down to #5 at the end of the day to look for a friend .I saw a few guys on the water and yes a dog with really bad manners.I bet we crossed paths...

Were you the guy picking up trash at the pool near the split?  That person nymphed the pool across from me at dusk and landed at least one fish.

I was pitchin dries at that point.

Nice report MX, welcome home.  Yes there's definitely some good spots out there to investigate.  Did I meet you and your 9 buddies last year?  Everyone had the same Walmart rig?  That was both funny and pretty cool. For me the fishing for the biggies has been a little slow this summer I must admit.  JL, there's a decent number of fish in the 17-20 range at Putah that fight hard and I think that's why that 23-24 range is tough.  For me it is.  The fish puts on so much weight to get from 20-24 inches.

I can see why you get a lot of holes in the waders MX.  The brush is pretty thick along that stretch from the deer sign down to the tailout.  I finally sent my waders in to Simms last spring to get them professionally patched and they did a great job.  These days I try to be a bit more careful of them, so I probably miss some great spots.

Yeah, that was me in the blue hat.  You made a few drifts and picked up a trout pronto.  I was impressed.  I told you, but you probably couldn't hear me that I was '0 for 50' on picking up fish on strikes on my dries.  Was having a tough time of it for some reason. I usually do very well in that spot.  The hatch was going until about 45 min before dark and it kind of shut down.  With 45 min of light left, a stiff wind, and small dries, it's hard fishing in choppy water.

Anyway, thanks for picking up trash.  That's a very cool thing to do.
