I fished the creek on Tuesday after being away for a couple of weeks.  I fished the late morning, hoping to see some insect activity.  As usual there were TONS of tiny black midges, but that was about it.  I couldn't get any takers on a small black midge imitation, but a #18 tan micro mayfly fooled a few trout.  I hooked four, landing two.  The biggest fish was a FAT 20" rainbow.  Looking back at my records, the fishing should really start to pick up soon.

JT What are the flows at? I know you posted a link a few months ago concerning where you can check flow level, but I cannot seem to find it. Would you mind posting it again? Thanks.

On Tuesday the flows peaked at over 800 cfs.  I think they jumped pretty quick, because the water was really murky.  Today they're around 650 cfs.  You can check the flows on the creek through this link:

JT, it's interesting that you feel that the fishing should pick up soon.  Historically, for me, June and July have typically been my toughest months.  Then, in August the fishing starts to improve even though the stream flows are pretty much the same as June/July.  Last year I found a couple of spots that produced even in June and July, but this year not one of them has produced any good fish.  I keep a fishing journal so I am able to track historical trends.  I have been particularly disappointed in this Summer's fishing since I had a really great Winter season.

The fishing has picked up for me in late July the past couple of years.  This year I continued to hook nice fish throughout the late spring and summer but couldn't bring them to net.  I guess that's how it goes sometimes.  Once the flows drop to around 300 cfs, the fishing can be awesome.  Those are definitely my favorite flows on the creek.

This is a good time to try some different techniques like swinging soft-hackles or maybe suspending
a midgling below a dry fly. I know I tend to overfish areas that I get too comfortable at.
Change can be good. L ately, I have had some of the best fishing I've had on Putah in a long time.
They are definately in there.
