Just got back from a 2 day trip to the clark fork of the stanislaus river and the fishing was excellent despite very low flows. Fished near the iceberg meadows area and caught no less then 25 fish a day, mostly 6 to 10 inch brookies and bows with a few 12 bows in the mix. I was surprised that most fish i caught were brookies, bueatifully colored little fish. Key was to find pockets that were atleast a few feet deep, kinda hard to do with the low flows but once I found these small pockets it was pretty easy to pull several fish from each one, fly selection didnt seem to matter all the usualls worked. Overall one of my better trips this year, The scenery up there is amazing, Its near kennedy meadows off hwy. 108. Defenitly worth the trip. I wonder if theres going to be fish dieoffs due to low flows and warm water temps. in the sierras this year ? I was wet wading and could defenitly notice the water warming quit a bit as I worked downstream. Oh, I also fished a small creek called disaster creek, It is supposed to have lohanton cutthroat but I didnt find any just a few very small wild rainbows. All fish caught except for maybe 3 the entire trip were wild.Sorry no pics. I have a bad habit of taking my camera and leaving the memory stick at home, DOOOOOOHHHHH.
I love that area to fish... I hear you on that 25 fish a day.... In three days, I beleive a friend and I hooked probably 100+ fish at a small lake in that area.
Thats sounds like you had a awsome time. I just came back from there myself from a 2 day trip. I stayed in a cabin just before Dardanelle. I also had a good fishing when I was there. I had pretty much the same luck, around 20 + fish aday. I also fished by CottonWoods, which was good fishing but too many people for me, I prefer the river below my cabin. I did get 4 or 5 fish that were around 13" inch size and lost one brown that was probilly bigger than that. All I was using the whole trip was royal wolfs, and stimulators. I always have a blast when I'm up there. I've been up there two weekends out of this month. Oh, and no cutts in disaster creek? thats insane I was up there last year and they were everywhere. How far did you go up disaster creek? I know that trail is a little draining on the body after a while but always worth it. Anyways here is a pic of one of the nicer fish from my trip.
I guess I should have gone farther up disaster creek, I only went about 100 yards upstream, It was the end of the day and was pretty tired. I love that area up around dardenelle, Was really nice in late may when I had the entire place to myself. Hope to make it up there 1 or 2 more times before winter.
