Our 4wd club went on a trail ride last week out of Courtright Res which is East of Fresno.  It is somewhat of a drive from the Vacaville/Dixon area but if people are looking for an alternate destination out of the valley heat it's a nice spot.

The lake is 8,000+ feet in elevation and above the valley heat with cool nights.  We only camped there one night before moving onto the trail but the fishing was a kick in the pants.  There are no shortages of 12" rainbows with a fish on every cast in the late evening and early morning.  You had to make a few more casts durring the middle of the day but the results were the same.

Not a bad place to take a kid or be a kid.

Hey that sounds nice. I noticed you said your 4wd club. Did the 4wd trail start at the lake? How is the drive to the lake? Your right that sounds  like the place you want to take the kids.

The 4wd trail starts at the lake. The first part of the trail is 2wd pick up truck easy with no worries about getting stuck. It leads to a campground on the North end of the lake near what is called Voyager rock and Chicken rock. Chicken rock is where the real trail begins.

The drive to the lake fromt he town of Shaver lake takes about 45 minutes. It is all paved but keep in mind the lake sits at over 8,000 feet so it's mostly uphill. BTW the water wasn't that cold. Swimming wasn't that bad.
