Truckee Report

Hit the truckee last w/e and did well. caught 13 fish in 2 days. not even long days. got a birthday brown on friday around 20" and a rainbow around 20" the next day. lost 2 other rainbows that were even bigger that put up brutal victorious fights.  Fishing is good everywhere on the river right now.  I fished above the Hirschdale exit.  And in the section called the loop.  #16 PT's and  Haers Ears were my best flies.  Fishing isnt that good early morning not till around 10am did things start happening and pretty much go on all day. Tons of differnet bugs.  Its getting fished pretty hard saw alot of people on sat. morning the key is to get to an area that hasnt been fished yet.  Going back for another round this w/e. I'll let you know how i do and I'll try to get a pic of that brown up as soon as i stop working or fishinbiggrin

Nice report, Matt.  I've been wanting to fish the Truckee for a while now, but I can't find enough time to get up there.

Hi, thanks for the nice report on  your Truckee success. Have only fished that stream a couple times with flys w/o much success on the wild trout so looking for some tips. For example, what size tippit? Flourocarbon recommended? Are the fish leader shy? Is extreme stealth required? Do you dead drift w indicator, swing,  high stick, tight line, etc... I  know the ans can depend a lot on the particular water involved. Also assume it's necessary to "get down" with lots of shot? Understand from Ralph Cutter's writings that the trout don't care if the shot is only 2" from the fly. Any comments on this?

I plan to spend a day up there next week encouraged by your report.

Thanks for any help,
Eric

Eric - I have been fishing the Truckee a lot this year and the main thing is good presentation and don't wade like a water buffalo. You can literally catch Truckee trout czech nymphing with 2 feet of fly line out....I fish 35 ft or less line out 90% of the time.

I use Flourocarbon because the Truckee gets hammered with pressure and it sinks better than mon. Usually 4x/5x. I usually use a big nymph with a smaller dropper under an indicator. Shot is needed, but the closest I put it to my bug is 8 inches...I'm sure you can catch fish with it 2 inches away, but I'd never put it that close. Streamer work well and is the best way to catch big browns...

Best thing is to screen the water for bugs, match the nymphs and adjust your indicator/ weight to the water type...Don't be lazy about it. If the flies aren't working, switch to something else...

Dries are happening right now, PMDs during the day and Caddis/stones in the evening.

Farther away from everybody else, the better it should be.

Getting them all day: headbang.gifheadbang.gif

JT - When are we going?!

dpt916 - thanks for the great input. Will take your advice to heart this coming week and report outcome. Plan a day on the Truckee Wed or Thur. Had a very productive long weekend on the upper sac 2 wks ago with my first 10 fish day, but need to cultivate a closer venue. It's a long haul up to Dunsmuir.

2 1/2 more days of the Truckee and still very good action. Caught most fish under the indicator but got a few swinging flies and quite a few on a dry just at dusk. Caught fish from 6" to 22" and just about everywhere in between. Lost alot too those fish are so hot they'll cut you off on a rock so fast sometimes. Lost a few big ones this way. Still gotta love it.  Here's a few pics.  My buddy was a little trigger happy on my big one but you can see her in the muddied up water. She was a beast.

Sweet, Matt! That is a nice brown. I was lucky enough to catch one a month ago about 20" on a PMD Sparkle dun midday. It fought harder and ran up AND downstream. Love the browns on the Truckee!smile

Matt--Thanks for the reports. Great fish! I am going to fish the East Walker and the Truckee this week. Without giving away any of your secret holes...any general ideas for which turnouts we should take for the Truckee? And, is it wadeable? I know you mentioned Hirshdale...any other ideas? Any other hints would be great. Thanks again. I will report in when I get back.

Bro, I would make you attention on Glenshire. It's wadeable & the earlier you get there, the better. Or you can go l8r in the afternoon, but I believe you might get some tubers floating down the river. I could be wrong, but that is my suggestion. It helped me land a 20" a few weeks back & that off of my 4 weight. I could stop shaking from that experience for a couple of days. ;)
