Russian River Question
Permalink

I'm taking my son to Sonoma State for an orientation day tomorrow and have a few hours to kill.  The Russian River is not far from there and I was wondering if there is anything happening there this time of year, and where one might go for a few hours.  Any advice would be appreciated.  Thanks.

Phil

I heard there were shad running in the Russian.  It sounded like there were more in the Russian than in the American.

Hey Chemdoc, I have fished the Russian quite a bit and right now is a great time for smallmouth bass.  I would suggest renting an aluminum canoe for a couple hours from a place in Healdsburg.  I haven't done it in a couple years so I forget the schedules.  They have a shuttle that takes you up river and you float down.  As far as the Shad go I would call Western sport shop on Santa Rosa ave.  542-4432.  If Carlo is there he'll know the deal.  I work right on the banks of the Russian and have watched some amazing little runs of salmon and steelhead for about three years.  Next year I promised myself I was going to start steelhead fishing out there.  Best of luck! Cole
