Just got back from a trip fishing the east, west and little walker rivers. 5 hour drive each way ! fishing was decent, the east walker below bridgeport resavoir is pretty much everything you could possibly want in a river, its awesome, and lots of bugs, i only laned 2 wild browns about 16 inches on elk hare cadiis, but lost a few more and had alot of hits on various dries, these fish are super wary, I watched em reject my best efforts over and over again, very frustrating but still alot of fun. The east walker river is a must if you love trout fishing. The west walker was full of some nice planters, So i broke out the ultra light spinning rod and caught pretty easy limits of fish everyday, Same with the little walker, lots of planters, this little river is a great river to fish, especially if you like small water were you gotta literally hunt the fish, lots of crawling up on spots and lots of cows to keep you company. I was surprised at the fish planted there, they were much better quality then a putah creek planter. I was reminded very qiuckly to watch for rattlesnakes, came close to one within my first 15 mins. of fishing, then saw a few others, So the hiking thourgh sagebrush and rocks is very slow going because you gotta watch close for snakes. I went over sonora pass on the way up and over ebbits the way back and still quit a bit of snow up there. The area up there has so many fishing options, alpine lake looks great, the east carson, north fork stan, silver creek, mosqiuto lakes, all look like great places to fish. Overall a great trip, i would highly recomend it, the scenery is awesome, The east slope sierras is so different then the west slope.
Glad you had a nice trip. I really like that area. I take it you fished the meadow area of the West Walker across from the Marine base? Lot's of fun dry fishing in there. Damn cows keep ruining the bank though.
When I go that way, I usually take highway 50 down to Markleville, fish the East Carson, head over the Monitor Pass (great views of the Eastern Sierra and Nevada) and fish around the Bridgeport area. I know alot of people prefer the East Walker, but I'm fond of the West. I bet the view from the Sonora pass up into the valley made you wonder about a little hike? :)
I've been waiting to read the report from your trip. I am leaving on Tuesday and will spend 2 nights in Markleeville and 3 in Bridgeport. While in Markleeville, I plan to fish both the West and East Carsons. Bridgeport looks like it will be the West and East Walkers and probably Green Creek. I love the Eastern Sierras. Bridgeport is especially beautiful with the 10,000' Sierra crest as a backdrop. I'll file a report when I get back next week.
Hope you have a good trip billm. The east carson looked like it was in great shape, If i would have known how close i was to it i defenitly would have tryed it, I wanted to, but never made it to green creek, Theres just so much water to try and cover up there, If ya fish the west walker at all it is clear but a little fast right now. Maybe it was just my luck, But those browns on the east walker are so selective it's really amazing how diffacult those guys are to get hooked up with. The area right below the damn was the best but some good looking water all the way to the neveda border, Once I crossed the border it was all pvt. property. Please let us know how the trip goes, I may spend 4 days next month fishing the east carson around markleeville, still trying to decide. One last thing , The wind really kicked up almost every afternoon, so be preppered for that.
