middle fork stanislaus report

Headed up to kennedy meadows near sonora pass for the weekend. When I saw the river my heart sank, It was high and muddy, Basically unfishable, Maybe with bait a few fish may have been caught. I headed a few miles down road to the clark fork river and it was a little better but still to high and muddy. I lucked out and found a creek called eagle creek that was flowing pretty clear, Caught several rainbows in there All 6 to 8 inch wild bows. All caught on prince nymphs. I read reports that say the sierra rivers should be very fishable early this year due to the lack of snow, These reports obviously are wrong, I wouldn't head up to a non tailwater river till at least 1st of june. So pretty much spent most of the weekend hiking and doin a little target practice. Even though the fishing wasn't good, The scenery up there is stunning. In a few weeks I hope to make it up to one of the east slope rivers.

Hey captain. I'm sorry conditions weren't better for you, but it is a really beautiful area. I use this link:  http://www.dreamflows.com/flows-canv.php to help me prepare for when certain waters will be ready to attack, or fish... :)

A friend and I took my son up to the Silver Fork Saturday and the flows there are also pretty fast.  Nymphing would probably work, but we like to use dries there, so we spent out time target shooting with our .22's and my son's bow.  The water temp was 48 degrees, a little chilly for active trout but not too bad.  Another couple of weeks will probably make a difference.  And of course, the shad should be coming up the American soon.

I'm curious were the silver fork is located at ? I've seen ya mention it a few times. Water was very cold I'd guess mid forties. I always bring along a .22 or a pistol for a little fun if the fishin bombs. Thanx for the link patrick. Since this is pretty much my first sierra fly fishing season I'm still learning new waters. Plan on doin alot of traveling this summer.

I believe chemdoc is referring to the silver fork of the americna river right outside the town of kyburz.  There is a trail there at the end of the road where you can hike in to where the silver fork coverges with caples creek.  Big brownies are suppose to lurk in them parts.   The silver fork is just west of Strawberry on highway 50, before you get to South Tahoe.

BTW, I'm planning on fishing for the first time in over a year around Plumas county in the next couple weeks (my annual trek).   If anyone is interested in making a weekend of it, let me know...  Waiting for the water flows to calm down.

There are lots of browns in the silver fork.  It is a really nice river.  My biggest fish out of there was a 20" brown.  That was about 10 years ago.  I was fishing the upper part of the river near Silver Lake.  It's a little bit of hike, but it's definitely worth it.

Thanx JT, I'm thinking of heading up there for memorial day weekend for 3 or 4 days. Anyone suggest a decent campground in that area, I'm thinking maybe silver fork campground or china flat I think they are called. Also a good chance to fish the upper american river.

You can camp at either of those campgrounds.  I've stayed at both.  You'll want to get away from people, though.  The further you get away from the campgrounds, the better the fishing is.

You can also camp on Silver Lake.  From there, you can hike downstream to fish the river.  Also, there are a couple of feeder streams into Silver Lake with some nice brook trout.  You don't have to hike too far to get to them which is a plus (more time for fishing).

That's the one.  I worked there two summers in a row at a Boy Scout camp (Camp Silverado) about ten years ago.  I got a lot of fishing in those two summers.  That's actually when I got into fly fishing.

The river that flows out of Silver Lake is the Silver Fork of the American River.  I'd check the regs, but I think all tributaries of the American River are now open year round.  The Silver Fork, being a tributary of the American, would fall into this category.  I believe that regular trout season regulations apply to the rest of the rivers and streams in that area.

Chemdoc, I'm planning to probably head to the silver fork this coming weekend for a few days, Any advice would be greatly appreciated, Do the campgrounds in the area have good river access? I hope to do some hiking and get away from the more heavily pressured area's.

Do you have any #12 black buggers?  If not, get some and use them in the deeper holes.  Get down deep in those holes.  There are some nice browns in that river.

Captain,
I just read a report that Silver Lake and Caples Lake are still frozen.  They both feed the Silver Fork, so the water is probably pretty cold.  The fishing will probably be a little slow as the fish won't move very much in the cold water.  Just a heads up.

thanx for the heads up JT. After further research I'm afraid the campgrounds in that area may be full by the time i can get up there. So I'm kinda in limbo about were i'm going. Possibly a east slope river like the walker, owens, or the carson. Having a hard time deciding were to get away from the memorial day weekend crowds. But i defenitly will hit the silver fork if not this weekend probably next. Of course any suggestions from anyone would be appreciated. Driving time is not a factor, I'll drive up to 5 hours from the bay area if need be.

If memory serves me correctly, the flows on the silver fork (looking at dreamflows) as still pretty high.  I'd wait until they drop to under 250.  The east walker might be a good spot, plus there are plenty of streams around the bridgeport area.  The east carson is probably still a bit high.

I'm off to plumas country tomorrow for a couple of days of fishing/exploring.  Right now is just about the perfect time for that area with the shortage of snowpack this year.  Plus yellow creek is spring fed...  Ahhh, it will probably suck when I get there...  Hope not :)

Hey Patrick,

I checked Dreamflows and can't find a listing for the Silver Fork.  If you can let me know where this information can be found, I would very much appreciate it.  Also, let us know how the fishing is in Plumas County.  I am heading to the Sierras for the day on Thursday to begin my summer break the right way, and have often thought of trying Yellow Creek.  Thanks.

Phil

Hey Chemdoc,

The dreamflow I use for the Silver is the South American reading around Kyburz.  Since the silver converges with the American at Kyburz, I figure it is a pretty good indicator of how the flows on the Silver are.  At least it's worked out that way the past few seasons.

If you go to Plumas county early enough in the season, check out the Jamison creek which converges with the Middle Fork Feather around the Greyeagle area.  Beware of rattlesnake though...

I'm packing my gear now, I'll give a report when I return...

I need to make a correction.  When I looked at the report for Silver and Caples Lake, I looked at the wrong date.  The report was for a month ago.  I thought it was strange that they were still frozen with the mild winter that we had.  They are no longer frozen, but there's probably still some run-off.

i've had some great fishing on the east fork of the Carson river.  It's one of my favorites.

Park at Hangman's bridge and walk the fire road in to the cable crossing, it takes about 45 minutes or so.  From there you can fish back upstream, it'll take most of the day to get back.  beautiful scenery and possibly great fishing.  i've had great luck there on PMD's and Elk hair caddis.
