Got to the creek at 8 a.m today, fished #5, started at the "no rental boat beyond" sign. Pretty much went completely around the island twice, hitting every good looking spot, not spending alot of time in each spot, Only one fish hooked on a #16 pheasant tail, lost it, was maybe 15 inches. The wind was absolutey BRUTAL ! Many times had to time my casts between gusts, Using a heavey sink tip line helped alot. Very little insect activity today. A couple of guys starting bait fishing near me, after a few mins. they asked if the creek was open to bait fishing, I told em no, they said the lady at pardehsa store told them it was open, they were pretty pissed, They were on the backside of the island so it took a little wading and walking to get there, They quickly left and said they would have to head to berryessa. Probably would have did a lil better if not for the wind, oh well, as always had a good time and learned a little something about casting in heavey winds. Putah has been kickin my butt lately !!!!!!!! One more thing I'd like to add is that I think a sink tip is the way to go with high flows, As I dont like to use shot much, Maybe just me, but my casting really goes to hell when im using shot.
Fishing in the wind can seriously wear you out! Casting is a chore. When fishing with a floating line, your line gets blown around on top of the water so you have to mend constantly. It makes it nearly impossible to get a good drift. The wind does create "chop" on the water making it easier to approach the fish without spooking them. Good luck getting your fly down to them, though.
