Not sure, Spunk.  I am also new to Putah Creek.  I hit the creek for a few hours on Saturday afternoon and didn't even have a strike. I did see one trout jump but that was it.

Wading is a challenge because of the swift current, and the rocks. Try taking a stick with you (if you don't already have one).

At any rate, I didn't do very well on PC my first time out either.  I think the trout in the Eastern Sierra like me better

Hey Spunk,

I believe if you look back in the archives of this site you will find a post very similar to yours by me. It's a tough creek, I think everyone will agree. I do not by any stretch have it nailed and I am sure there are people far more qualified than me to respond. However I can tell you this. It takes time, patience, and a lot of visiting this website to learn about this creek. This can be a very productive stream, you just really have to put some time and energy into it. These are just off the cuff tips. If it is easy for you to thread your tippet into your fly, your fly is probably too big, if you are not pulling up a little bottom crap, weeds and moss etc, every once in a while, you probably need more split shot, and finally if your bringing your dog to play in the creek or jumping up and down when you get mad....DON"T. Cause these fish spook easy. Like I said these are some of the very simple rules I follow, and everything changes regularly out there, and let me tell you, I ain't that succesful yet either. I have learned so much from a young man here named JT, he's a great fisherman and all around nice guy, he's a great deal younger than me and that is a little irritating , but like I said I have learned a lot from him. So I guess that would be my final advice. Hook up with someone here that fishes out there a lot, it does not take much to get these guy's to go fishing. Good Luck and keep us posted

I've been fishing the creek since July. I've probably had 3 outstanding days and many days where I came home wondering why I even went. My wife has asked numerous times why I keep going and am I tired of that place yet.
I guess the challange of trying to get it right keeps me at it. Just when I think I have it down, I get skunked over and over.
Keep at it. Remember what you've read on this site. There is some very good info here.

I am new as well to the creek, and am thankful for this forum.  I have noticed that a few of you guys have talked about adding weight to your line, I was wondering what you guys thought about sinking tip line and if that would work?

Spunk, I fish the creek quite a bit and I agree a lot with what KHB has to say.  Putah IS a difficult stream.  It is heavily pounded so the fish do get very finicky.  If they weren't difficult to catch, they wouldn't get to the size that they do.  You just have to put in the time and effort to learn where to fish and how to fish.  Another factor is the changing stream flows.  Right now the stream is in transition from Winter (below 100 CFS) to Summer (500+ CFS) flows so many of the Winter "hot spots" are too swift now and many of the Summer "hot spots" are not deep enough yet.  Fishing during this transition period can be good, you just have to find the fish.  A week ago the first area I fished produced ZERO.  The second area, however, was very productive.

No hackle,

One word of advice is that if you near drowned you were probably fishing in a section with fairly fast water. Fish are lazy just like fishermen. They don't hang out in the fastest water. If you have caught fish in a certain area the past few months chances are the fish have moved downstream from where they were. The caddis are picking up right now so you can get away with high sticking a fox poohpah fairly close to the bank. If you are standing in fast water you probably stepped on the fish. One other technique is to try a 90 degree leader setup. Access 2 and 5 are usually better during these flows try swinging a bigger fly with a soft hackle through the riffles. Beyond 400 CFS the best fishing is out of a float tube. If you have been fishing lakes try carrying a float tube up to the area below the Berryessa dam. The best fishing is the last two hours of the day. You can float back to your car at the end of the evening.

I just floated up by the dam today.  I wasn't fishing just scouting around with my wife.  We didn't see any fish but it was raining, so it was difficult to see much of anything.  There were tons of midges everywhere.  Most were probably #26 and smaller, but I did see a couple that were about #18.  I also saw a little yellow stonefly.  I took a couple of pictures of it, but they didn't turn out.  I was using one of those waterproof disposable cameras and it focused on the background instead of the fly.  Oh well.

As everyone has said, Putah can be difficult.  Most people use a nymph and indicator rig with split shot on the tippet to get the flies down to the level of the fish.  One bit of advise that I have is to learn to control your line.  This is crucial for casting, drifting your fly, and hooking and playing fish.  In my opinion, this is one of the most difficult parts of fly fishing.  It just comes with practice.

Most of what I have learned has come from reading.  I have read numerous books, articles, postings on this site, etc.  There are many on this site and the old fishing report page who have taught me a ton.  If you want to read over the reports from the old site, here is the link:
http://www.webcom.com/atk/putahcreekflyfishing/putahcreekfishingreport.html

Keep at it.  It took me a long time to land my first fish on Putah on a fly rod.  It drove me nuts, bacause I grew up fishing the creek with a spinning rod and nightcrawlers.  I could catch fish anywhere with that rig, but with the fly rod I would fish runs that I knew held some nice fish and wouldn't get a thing.  For some it just comes easy, but others have to pay their dues.

Nothing is wrong with you-but you might try three simple things:

1. Fish early in the am or later in the afternoon.
2. Use a lot of weight, get your nymph bumping along the BOTTOM.
3. Fish where "Lazyboy Recliner" fish might hang out.

Think " If I was a lazy, fat bastard bug smacking trout, where would I sit"?

Watch: Spend time looking at the river, those trout are not going anywhere, but 10 minutes of river watching will change the way you fish.

Look: Check the underside of rocks, match the bugs there with your fly selection, if you have anything the same size and color, you're in business. Good hunting!

PS: Failing this completely-do not come over to my spot when I am fishing on the river-you have bad juju-and I do not want any of itsmile
