Can anybody recommend any good streams that are open to fishing that are within a 2 hour or so drive of Sac.? I like Putah, but that can get kind of old sometimes. Any help is much appreciated. Oh and Happy holidays/ Merry Christmas (Gotta be politically correct!)
I dont know much about it but you might wanna try the lower yuba river for steelhead and resident browns and rainbows, maybe start around the hwy 20 bridge. Probably gonna wanna start with stonefly nymphs, and maybe an egg pattern
I fished the lower yuba right below the 20 bridge yesterday. Fish were rising everywhere. I tied on a size 16 chocolate may and hooked up immediately. By this time my wife made down to the river with a big black dog that lives in the first house there and she proceded to throw a huge freaking limb in the water for FIDO to fetch. Boy was I pissed...The best bunch of risers I've seen on the yuba all year and I get to fish 'em for 3 minutes...

Typically you don't find too many adult steelhead in the Yuba above Dequarre Dam. I fished the Yuba a LOT for about 10 years and managed to hook less than a dozen adult fish. Landing is another story.
The fish on the Yuba are hot and fight well beyond their size. Make the trip and enjoy.

The only fish I landed looked like a small 1/2 pounder. I've never seen any really big steelhead on the yuba either. There was a decent bunch of summer run; but there only about 24-27" average. Last year was a washout during the best steelhead time. BTW, there was every bit as much bug life on the river Christmas day this year as there was last year. I should know, because I stood in the EXACT same place last year on the same day. The reason I fish so much is because my wife is truly the best in the world. She tags along to take pictures of everthing I catch.
I'm headed back to the Yuba this weekend. I'm going to spend a little more time on the water and hike up above 20 a ways to scout the steelhead situation. This time last year the flows came up so fast I was not able to get up around the bend without being half billy goat and giraffe. The flows were perfect last weekend. Hopefully this little rain did not put too much color in the water to spot fish.
Hey rich what day are you heading up? I may try the yuba sunday, but im trying to decide on that or the american on monday, but i think that place is gonna be a zoo. Been up to the yuba twice in last 2 months with probably a totall of 15 hours of fishing time, and i am sad to say i have not had a single hit yet, but i am persitant, never went above the bridge but thats were i want to try, does the yuba have browns ? If ya see some guy in grey and black waders and a black beenie cap with a wood chopping self taught casting style that would be me Or posibly the yuba on saturday and the american on monday, just gotta see how things go.
I'm gonna be at the Hwy 20 bridge around noon Sunday. That seems to be about the time the midges have started getting thick and then the other morsels start to appear progressively until dark. I'll be in my orange simms cap imitating that same self-taught wood-chopping fly- cracking subtle as a elephant stampede presentation. (But guess what...it still catches the fishies!!!!
