What is your favorite combination when using a dropper. I like to use a red X-Tend Abody Midge on top with a hare's ear as the dropper. I think the red attracts the fish. I get most of my fish on the dropper. Good Fishing to all.
I use a rubber duckie for my indicator, then a pigen for my first and a pot pouri of items for the dropper. Ok maybe that wasnt funny but I tried. I usually use a bead head of some sort like a PT flashback, prince, zug-bug and then for the dropper I go really small and use like a hares ear, wd40, I think they call it zebra midge. Ill tie on a million different combos until i find the right one, but I like to use a bead head on top for a little weight bcause I dont like to use micro-shots unless I absolutely have to.
I agree with Moto man,I like to use the bigger heavier fly for the top fly and on that I attach to the bend of the hook usually a piece of one size smaller tippet than I'm using on top at a length of 10 to 12".Then my second fly is like Moto GP said usually always smaller and always a different pattern and color.I try to run a combo of caddis/mayfly or mayfly/midge or stonefly/egg and that seems to expedite the process of what the fish are keying in on that particular day.And I also find that about 80% of my fish take the bottom fly,I believe that its because the more natural non-impeded drift that the bottom fly can achieve is the reason why.
i usually tie my dropper off the bend of the upper hook, usually use a go to fly like a prince, a hares ear, or a p.t nymph, then i experiment with the lower offering, anything fron an egg to a size 18 copper john to a size 20 somthine midge....once in a while i'll tie my dropper on with an extended blood knot but this tends to cause tangles.... i like to use two different extremes in my offering.
