Went out today from 8-430. Started out down by access 3, didn't have any luck. Moved up below th resort just above the fast water. There were 10 to 12 fish in the 20+ range just setting in the riffle. I tried everything I had, dries, nymphs. They look, but no takers. They would occassionally hit on the surface. but, they were chasing eachother around like cats and dogs, being territorial. It didn't seem to matter that I was visible to them. Is this part of spawning?

I'm no expert Mike, but that area does hold spawning fish and when the big boys hang around in plain sight, it sounds like spawning.  Most fly fishers try to avoid these fish in order to allow them to spawn in peace and produce another generation.  Fishing in the spawning beds often results in fould hooking since the fish aren't very interested in feeding.

yeah this definately sounds like spawning activity to me or maybe pre-spawn at least.I saw the same activity near the resort last Sunday.I think with the below average flows the fish are spawning extra early this year. Thanks to Chemdoc for great advice about leaving these fish alone or at least trying to,this time of year spawners can be just about anywhere and sometimes its hard not to hook one.Have I caught spawners in Putah...? Yes I have but I really stay off the obvious beds.

Being my first year on the creek, I wasn't really sure where the spawning beds were. I guess I was just excited to see such big fish. I will make sure I steer clear in the future. Thanks for the info.
