Went out in the afternoon/evening with a friend of mine in the canoe. Took it up below the dam, the water is really low, btw. Caught several on small woolly buggers, (color scheme is a secret) with a zug bug dropper, one of the best days I have had in a long time. Caught 1 over 20 and really fat, probably 4 lb plus, and several between 17-19 all about the size of footballs, the fatest fish I have seen in a very long time. Unfortunately had to keep one who would not resuscitate . I am hoping to make it out again next weekend to try the same thing down a Solano, but looking at the forecast I might need a jacket.
Sounds like a lot of fun. How did you get your canoe up there? Are you a member of the campground? I used to float tube up there, but have been to lazy to drag my tube up there. I found a fairly good area above access 1 that is easier to get to. Try a size 16 red brassie with a CDC wing or a midge flash wing, this fly has been working good on the big fish wading or floating. Here is a photo of a nice 20" fish caught by another fly fisher this summer. Second cast and the fight was on.
Wow thats a nice fish. Bet he fought hard. Red brassies? Do the blood midges survive this long in Putah? Are you fishing like a midge, indicator and slow retrieve on the bottom? Nice fish though. I know that area you are talking about around access one, never fished it seriously though. Looking at that trout, I wish I had. Good job. No I am not a member of the campground, Im college student at Davis, cant afford it . We (you need two people in a Canoe to do this) launch accross from the upper campground, below the dirt lot there, and paddel up stream. The lower flows make this easier, though clearing ground can be a problem. All in all it has been a lot of fun. All trips have had at least something bigger that 16. It has been awesome to fish that area . Though access is tricky.
That's not me, Gordon outfished me that day. I only caught a few small fish that day. The area does hold some of the largest rainbows on the creek though. I think the brassie seems to imitate worms, caddis and blood midges, maybe that is why it works.
