Right Before the Island

I've seen lots of top water action during the summer months right before you get to the island.  I've fished it a few times and haven't had so much as a lick.

I would fish it, get nothing, and a bait and chuck guy would throw his in and pull out a trout.  How frustrating!

Has anyone had any success before the island?  If so, what kind of rig, technique, and flies did you use?

If your talkin bout the first island above the lake near access #5, i find that alot of planters are in that area, dont want those things anyway. From my limited experience ALOT of the fish u see rise down there are suckers or carp, especially the splashey rises.

If you are talking about the stretch between 4 and 5, I have caught several trout out of there on drys, and a healthy percentage are wild fish.  Though i have seen suckers and carp in the still water below the island, I have not seen very many above it.  That area is, in my opinion one of the most challenging areas to fish, due to the steep banks, and the deep water.  What I have found is that during mid day, ants are fairly consistant producers, but come night fall, the trout key in on the smallest drys I have ever seen.  I use either a size 20 or 22 mayfly, or similar sized caddis.  All in all, i think it is the size that matters, next time out, I am planning on trying a gray piece of cdc, about a mm in diameter, on a size 20 hook.  I have only seen one other person land one on a fly from this stretch, so good luck!  Let us know how you do.
