I really have been wanting to catch a brown on putah, was wondering if anyone might suggest some spots that i might try. Do they preffere different type of water then bows? I saw a big one rise three times in the same place about a month ago it was at least 25 inches and very very fat, tossed everything i had at him for hours on a few occasions but no luck, this was on the back side of the island at access #5, right were that old bent up pipe goes into the water.Any advice is very much appreciated guys. I'll be hittin it bright and early tommorrow for a sun up to sun down trip.

Fairly soon there will be some big browns spawning in that area on the back side of the big island. With emphasis on the spawning part. They are there every year and hopefully the years to follow if you catch my drift.

I am not to sure on some peoples opinions on fishing the Browns in the fall, however I usually start fishing #5 and #4 in October. I fish this way for a combination of reasons, but mostly I like the holding water in these areas, especially when the flows are between 200-300 cfs. I have found I  mostly catch Bows, however I did land a nice Brown last year, not necessarliy targeting him. I will say however, if you catch a up-runner Brown moving to a spawing area, I dont see how this differs from catching Rainbow's up top before they get on thier beds. I never fish up top while the Bow's are in full spawn, or target spawing Brown's down low, but many do. I mainly stay down low until the Bow's are about done spawning and If I get a hungry Brown on the line, then so be it, as a Brown trout is a fairly hearty fish (all you have to do is look at Solano lake and it should become obvious). Funny thing is, last year I met an Ol'timer who had some great photos of some nice Browns he caught on Putah the week before we met. The gentlemen told me he had fished Putah for 30 years and he does target Browns in the fall and mainly stays down in the lower sections. I had no reason to assume he targeted "spawning" fish, he just fished for the Borwn's the way most due, in the fall.

How do you not purposely target a spawning fish ? To me, a spawning fish will hit anything that violates it's space. I fish all year long and use pretty much the same flies year round and will on occasion catch a fish that is "spawning". If you think about it, the most active fish we catch are in pre-spawn mode where they gorge themselves in preparation for the actual event. After the fish spawns, they will protect their nest for a short while and then move on. There is definite moral line that has to be considered. How many fishing reports will start to say "Don't tread on the redds, but oh by the way the steelhead fishing is excellent using egg patterns drifted behind the spawning salmon."  As conservative sportsmen (and women) we all know what the right decision is.

well it easy to do...but I think you answered your own question when you mention "pre-spawn"
