I hear the reports and have seen people catch the big ones, but all I could catch were a 6 (if it was even that) and and an 11 incher. I was impressed however, because I wasnt expecting much since my parents have a place on lake Almanor where there are over 100 lakes and 1000 miles of river and streams. I plan on going to Putah a lot more because I live in Sac and go to CSUS and its hard to get up to Almanor during the winter. Any tips for this area would be much appreciated. Thanks,
Cant say that I am an expert on the creek since I have only fished it a few times, but each time I caught progressively more and larger fish. What has caught me fish....and some decent sized ones so far has been using a tan fox pupah and a grey, green or black wd40 as a dropper. I use a fairly large, visible fluff ball of a strike indicator that seems to float in the faster water sections better than others I have tried in the past. For me the strike indicator has been key in detecting the smaller strikes that I wouldnt have noticed using a smaller indicator. I also use one or two small split shot about a foot above my fly to make sure you are getting your offering near the bottom. What I have learned from some of the other guys that post tips on this forum is that you should feel your split shot bounce on the bottom from time to time which indicates you are fishing deep enough. Hope this helps and have fun! The creek is a blast.
