Steelhead ?

Has anyone ever noticed that Putah is listed on the steelhead card and all rainbows over 16" are considered steelhead ?!? This strikes me as very odd, especially when F&G stocks rainbows in the creek that are somtimes pushing the 17" range. Am I really supposed to call those 16"-20" fish I catch "steelhead" ?

Unless anyone has seen them hiking around the diversion dam at Lake Solano, I think its safe
to say these are just large trout.

Yes you're right steelhead and salmon can make it past Diversion dam and it is usually in the fall or early winter, that's when solano irrigation dist can do repairs on the dam and can open the gates for a short period possibly letting in any fish waiting down below. There is also speculation that the some of the resident trout in Putah are decendents of steelhead that may have been trapped between the dams when the dams were built. This has never been confirmed and myself Ken Davis and Dr Pete Moyle were supposed to do some catching and sampling of these fish but to date have never got a chance to get together to do it.If and when we do I will definately let you all know. But for now I'm heading on to Wyoming to do some fishing and Mule deer hunting for a couple of weeks, see ya'll when I return.   Greg "OG" Bonovich
