I've taken my fly rods a couple of times to Utah without any problems.  I don't know if the recent terrorist scare has changed the policies, though.  They may search your bags extra careful, but if your rods are in your non-carry-on luggage, there shouldn't be any problems.  If people couldn't carry fishing gear on planes, that would put a serious damper on the fishing travel industry.
