I am a beginnig fly fisherman and have learned a lot from reading all of the posts from everyone at this website. As a new father I don't get to go out as often as I would like, and when I am not working on weekends I have been visiting my in-laws in Nevada City. Any information I could get about this area would be greatly appriciated.
I am probably going to target the North Fork Yuba River and its tributaries, although on the map it looks like the Truckee is just as close. I am also going to explore all of the smaller streams and creeks in between these areas.
I am also wondering if the highway 49 Bridge on the lower Yuba is the only access point for this area?
Again, any info will greatly help. I will pass on any information I learn as I fish & get to know this area better.
My suggestion is to buy the book Fly fishing the Tahoe Region by Stephen Rider Haggard. This book list all of the rivers, creeks and lakes in the area. My favorite place to catch wild rainbows and browns is Milton Lake. This is off Henness Pass Road. The road just opened up, and the fishing has been fair to good. The middle fork of the Yuba feeds the lake, and holds large rainbows. I like this area as you can fish the river, the lake and you can go off roading. The scenery is spectacular and the off-road trails are fun.
The flows have seemed to have stabilized around 600 cfs on Putah, and the fishing has picked up. I hooked five fish in a couple of hours and landed three. I usually don't use the PTs too much, but today a size 18 PT was the fly of choice.
