Fishing Putah

I have fished Putah Creek a number of times. Usually I have used bait however I am also a flyfisherman. I find the waters to be challenging..usually strong flows around the nice rocky areas and some really deep stretches which make wading impossible.

I've fished the bridge area below the dam(once) but the times I have gone by the place it is loaded wth folks fishing...

I've also fished some of the other areas down creek from there..

I have caught some fish however I am not consistent what so ever..even get skunked now and then..

Couple of questions..why is the water generally green..the moss plant life ? the water coming off the bottom of Berryessa ?

Also, any good tips on how best to approach Putah...

Just recently I figured out a very productive way to fish putah, for me anyway. I used to try long drifts in what looked like fishy water, but my successes were off and on.  What I do now is use semi heavy weight, find back eddies behind rocks, and let the fly circle around in the eddie.  I let it sit there for about 10 seconds, if the indicator doesnt pop down I repeat the process. If it isn't producing after 4 casts or so, I let it drift down the seam and eddie.  If you find the right conditions you will usually pull 2 or 3 fish out of each hole, then you move on.  It's basically pocket fishing I guess; the key is to find the right structure, and use the right fly, which comes with experience.

Thanks for that approach. Next time out I'll give it a try..I was out yesterday and caught a couple but found some of those rocky/eddie areas moving pretty fast. I'll have to spend more time working the flies and learning the waters.

For sure, I did a lot of hiking and climbing through brush to get at some of the water. A couple of times I found my way into an area that I figured not many folks would have taken the effort to get to...when I finally got there low and behold(based on what others have they left behind..) I found it not to be the virgin water I had hoped for..

I've tried some of those long deep stretches with long drifts at times and haven't faired well in those areas either. Those stretches look nice but haven't been real productive for me..
