I spent the weekend up at the cabin and fished the Yuba Friday and Saturday (@ HWY 20). Friday, when the sun broke through late PM, there was a decent hatch of really small creme and black midge/ gnat looking things. I had no luck on the small stuff but did find a few fresh stone fly husks. I switched over to a size 8 rubberleg stone nymph and was on fish. Caught 2 in less than 15 minutes. Saturday, I decided to go earlier and hike up around the bend and found my pot of gold. You're probable thinking the Yuba's blown this guy is a nut, but wait....here comes the good part. The main stem of the river spilts in two just up from the bridge and just up from there BINGO, the river splits into 4 different smaller "creeks". I was dredging my big stone nymph in the main stem when these black mayflys started landing on me. There were not that many but I was puzzled as to where there were coming from. I turned around and started watching these smaller creeks and saw trout rising. Long story short, caught 11 fish in the 12"~22" range on all sorts of various mayfly patterns. I had to work hard to get to these fish, but it was well worth the effort. These smaller fingers of the river are fairly clear about 3' visibility, bad part, there was a lot of rain/snow on sunday which might muddy things up a bit. These smaller channels should be fishable for about two more weeks, depending on how fast the flows drop. If anyone wants to see pictures of what the area/fish look like, send me a message. One last question, most of the fish had a wide redband on their side with white tipped fins. I've never caught any like that before, any idea what kind of trout they may be ?
