This weekend myself my son and 6 other friends booked a few days at a wonderful private flyfishing lodge in NW Calif about a 45 min drive from Weed on hwy 3 near Callahan. The area really reminds me of SW Montana with broad open valleys surrounded by beautiful alpine mountains, and just like Mont and Idaho everybody has a friendly wave for you as you pass by.I must admit that this is my favorite area in the entire state of Calif bar-none.The ranch provides a wonderful guest lodge with a small fly shop, fly tying bench, reading room,TV's,full kitchen and 3 bedrooms with 6 beds, also has a large deck with a BBQ outside. The areas to fish are 6 ponds 2 of these are actually small lakes, that are nestled in among huge mounds of river rock that was created by hydraulic mining operations many many years ago.The ponds are all connected by Sugar creek all within a short walk from the east fork of the Scott River. These fish all procreate in the creek and ponds and are wild. They average around 3-4 lbs and fight like wild fish do,we had many fish take us down to our backing in an instant. My 11 year old son's first cast of the day to a rising fish produced a 24.5 inch trophey rainbow. The smallest fish we landed was about 19" with the largest was I think 28",and believe me they do get even larger just look at the pictures on the website. We caught fish on buggers, streamers, midges and dry flys.I really enjoyed fishing for a pod of about 15 fish all large, that were feeding on adult and emerging black midges, talk about a challenge!!!This is some of the finest trout lake fishing I've ever experienced with out a doubt, and believe me I'm already looking forward to my next trip to my favorite flyfishing lodge. You know I have been looking at this place on the web for a while wondering if I should give it a shot. Now after hearing your report this is a defiante destination for KHB. Thanks for the review Bono. You know we still have an outstanding trip, I guess we may have to wait til next fall . Be well
I ran across the web site on another search and let's just say the pictures caught my attention. As fate would have it there's a free day on the schedule mid week, mid June, so what the heck, there are worse ways to spend a day. I'll let you know how it goes.
You interested in a driving/fishing partner to go up there? I have a flexible schedule and can probably go no matter what the day. Would also be interested in hitting the upper sac or lower sac too.
I'd normally be up for that, but in this case it will be mid week in a vacation where I'll be doing a combination of camping, fishing, traveling from point to point and other too-difficult-to-workaround circumstances. Where are you located? I'm mid-peninsula.
