Heavy tippets with nymphs on the yuba?

whilst lobbing nymphs yesterday on the Yuba, I waded on out and hucked my little 5x to 6x rig to the middle of the riffle where it was immediately engulfed by the largest trout I have ever seen. I'll put it in the 30" range (A disclaimer; at 62 years old I have no need to lie about this stuff). in the 5 to 10 seconds that I had him on he gave me a real good look and then headed upstream. Sigh.... But anyway, I want to know something. if I upgrade the tipper to say, 3 x, will I even stand a chance of catching a pig like that, or will they simply ignore my nymphs?

I'd stick to 5x and just expect to follow the fish unless your rod has the backbone to horse em a little bit.

For me it really depends on the clarity of the water. If it is muddy and off color then I have no problem with a heavier tippet. When the water is clearer then I go with a lighter tippet. As Lightfoot said, it is also dependent on your rod and backbone. If my rod can't hold the fish, then I want my tippet to break.

Side note...30" yuba fish isn't going to get muscled anywhere. ;)

 That fish went UP stream, against a honking current faster than I could get out of the water and go after him. I now understand  why guys like Eric and Ross have become streamer specialists. Hell, a good day at a lot of places is a few fish and I would gladly trade 5 or 6 dinks for a shot at one like the one I lost. From now on, I am bringing my sink tip and big fly box to the Yuba.
