Hey Eric I met you there on the island yesterday. How did you do? I caught 5 on the backside corner and caught two more at the riffles where we first met.
I've been fishing the last few weeks about mid-day with little action. The action that I'm getting is coming off red/black zebra's and occasionally a san juan. Sounds like you guys are getting some good action and I'm wondering if my pattern is off. I really like to dial in the bite on my own but my summer has not allowed me to net anything over 10" and I'm beginning to get frustrated (as the putah is known for.) I hate asking but can you guys give me some pattern tips?
San Juans are better when the flows start to jump up from the lower flows. Try some usual summertime patents like ants. Pick up some rocks from the bottom and look at what bugs are active. Caddis are moving around this time. Try using other patterns. Force yourself away from the standard midges that everyone uses on the creek. You'd be surprised what other patterns work there that aren't size 18-22.
Im going to fish the creek tomorrow I usually fish 3 and sometimes at the bridge i would like to try 5, so is 5 an island and can you cross to it in these flows
I fished Tuesday and Wednesday and did well. I was using a prince nymph in a #16 and a beadhead wd40 #18. Hooked into my biggest rainbow ever. Saw some nice fish feeding in some of the slower runs. Fished 11am to 120 did good today.
