I usually give the creek 4 or 5 days to settle down when the creek hits at about 300+, beatis and very small tan pupa or midge in morning, right around 1pm the mayflys start working. Switch up a lot move a lot until you find fish if you hook up stay put most likely a pod of fish in the hole. Think deep and finding the right bug. Many many times I've smelled like a skunk only to tie on the right color midge , mayfly , micro Caddis or even San Juan worm then bam bam it's on then time to move and/ or switch up again.
At 300+ I fish a bb in fast water and tail outs adjust leader length a ton for hook ups

Does it spread the fish out more into different parts of the creek, or do they just hunker down more in the deep?

Both. Spots change. New runs appear. Some runs are too fast now. Some are deeper. Gotta explore.
