Consider a donation to Putah Creek Ttrout

December 9, 2014 was a watershed moment in the 6 year effort to achieve Wild Trout status when the Fish and Game Commission approved the designation. Much of the scientific data collected by Heritage and Wild Trout to support designation was obtained through the volunteer support of PCT members and friends in the flyfishing community. Our ability to also provide material support  has come from the donations of both local and regional fly clubs and conservation groups as well as individuals.

Many of the current users and guests of this site are new to the Forum and may not be as familiar with the efforts involved these past 6 years to gain this protected fishery. We have had more than 100 volunteers provide more than 2000 hours of support. In 2016 we will be working on at least three projects to improve the fishery and fishing access, listed below.

-Expanding safe harbor areas that protect Young of the Year (YOY) from predation by the large fish during the first year of rapid growth. These are shallow side channels that require modification to provide sufficient summertime flows. A recent study by SCWA confirmed use of these side channels by YOY.

-Addressing the generally poor quality/quantity of spawning habitat by clearing and cleaning current beds, exposing buried gravel as well as supplementing it in older beds that are not now being used.

-Controlling Himalayan Blackberry and other non-native plants and planting native grasses to increase bank access to fishing along the entire reach.

Sponsorship of educational programs including fish days and classes in flyfishing for kids.

There are two ways you can support our fishery: by volunteering your time and by making a tax deductible contribution that will go towards the projects in 2016. We are asking for small donations, in any amount. You can donate on our website via PayPal (www.putahcreektrout.org) or mail a check to Putah Creek Trout, Suite #5, PMB 331 1520 East Covell Blvd, Davis CA 95616. Volunteer opportunities will be posted as they come up.

Thank you for your past contributions and for considering to help the fishery in the coming year.

The Board of Directors

Thanks Dr. Dan and thanks also for your volunteerism these past few years. I especially appreciate the day when you put back into place my dislocated little finger!
