Finally made it out to Putah last friday.  The fishing was slow from 11-12 at access 2.  Met another fly fisherman who said his friends call him EZ.  He said he hooked a few fish in the morning, but nothing landed.  I was talking to him about building bamboo rods as I switched from nymphs to eggs.  Two casts later I turned a fairly large fish.  Between casts and talking about bamboo I added the Toby special as a dropper.  A few casts later I hooked about an 18"er.  After a good fight I finally landed it.  Most of the fish caught before the big storm have been on huevos, big and small.  Toby special is probably the easiest "fly" one could melt. Toby from fly fishing unlimited showed me this "fly", and said it is a fish killer on the american.  Hook 2487 size 16.  All you have to do is heat up the hook with a lighter, and melt a 4mm orange plastic bead onto the hook.  For steelhead on the American melt a 6mm egg on a larger hook.  It seems like baitfishing, but if I'm not catching fish I will tie one on.  If Putah ever drops back down to a reasonable flow eggs will probably still work.  Hey Paul how do you post pictures in here? That is a nice fish!!!  It seems you have to have a personal website.  Anyone know of a link for free websites to post pics?

Easiest one I know of to host photos is yahoo. There are a ton of others though, photobucket and imagestation come to mind.

Back in the early to mid 90's a little glo-bug in the #16-20 range was very productive

Otter,

Toby gave me a few of his eggs last time I saw him and I forgot all about them!! There still in my vest though so I'll try them  maybe this week if the storm fails to materialize.

Photo bucket is the best way I know of to post photos. I just followed the instructions on the Kienes Fly Shop message board. You will find it under general fly fishing. http://www.kiene.com/

I haven't seen many other people fishing cane on Putah. I use mine there sometimes. Are you a rod builder?

Size 20 BWO.  No I don't build fly rods.  I break too many rods for various reasons.  Thank the fish gods for the sage warranty.  EZ was explaining the process.  Photobucket worked, I think.

Nice fish Otter, I've broken my share of graphite rods too. It's a good thing they work fast. My last broken Scott rod was back in my hands in three weeks. PB
