it has been about 5 or 6 weeks since I last had a chance to get out to Putah Creek but finally was able to do so 2 days ago (Wednesday). The hills have acquiried their Summer appearance since I was last there. It was a beautiful day though, clear skies, temps in the high 70's and very little wind. I decided to give the area between parking areas 4 and 5 a try and I was the only one parked in the lot and the only one on the water. The water was perfectly clear, about a foot higher than my last visit (450 cf/s vs 150 cf/s) and the water temp was 58 degrees. I tried various tandem nymph combinations with and without indicators for about four hours. I could not generate any interest from the denizens and did not see a single fish anywhere. Has anyone else had better results recently?
Hey Mike, best advise I can give you is to : cover water! Rather than changing nymphs often, try changing locations. Don't cast through the same line several times either. If you are confident you are getting your flies down to fish level, try drifting through a different line. Once you are satisfied you have covered the water well, move on. Also if you can get a high vantage point try to spot fish or movement in pools. These trout are sitting in feeding lanes, they are not moving around or migrating, don't think they will come to you, go find them.
