Car Break-in at Access 5

I had a very disturbing incident at access 5 this morning.  I arrived at about 8:30 and fished for two hours on the way to work.  When I returned to my van, I found someond had smashed a side window and stolen several items, including my laptop.  They even stole my cheap shoes while leaving the Simms gore-tex waders, so I think we can assume they were not fishermen.

I would appreciate it if everyone would keep an eye out for anything the thieves might have discarded.  I had a large stack of student lab reports which they likely will dump.  There were also a couple of library audio books which would be difficult to sell, given they are clearly labelled.  Needless to say, I am now very concerned about leaving my vehicle while fishing.  Has anyone else ever had a similar incident?  Hopefully this is an aberration and not a sign of things to come.

Back in 1997 I had my truck broken into while parked near the upper bridge. Tools, hi-lift jack and some other stuff was taken ALONG WITH MY GARAGE DOOR REMOTE AND VEHICLE REGISTRATION.

Whn I pulled into my driveway I fully expected their vehicle to be in the garage. It turned out they had parked behind my house and ran out the back slider door when I pulled up. They got away with some stuff but not everything they wanted.

Back then there was a rash of vehicle burgs/break ins in the Putah area. Now I don't carry a garage door remote and have my address cut out of my vehicle registration.

Maybe it's the same guy's. They have been on holiday. Quentin style. Did you ever find out who it was? If so, maybe worth a look.

that totally sucks.

I won't be up to the creek for a week at least with travel and whatnot in my schedule.  Did you file a police report?  Won't help catch them, I'm sure, but maybe will get the cops out there to patrol?

Shitty thing is that you almost wish you could catch someone breaking into your car just so you could smash their car windows in, and ask them what the **&@ they are thinking or something.  The need for justice in a situation like this is very strong.

I'm hopeful your insurance will cover most of your losses.

Sorry they messed with you, but thanks for letting the rest of us know.  Maybe we can organize a stakeout.

That was really a bummer. Sorry to hear you can't go fishing in a place like Putah Creek and feel safe. The following story shows that I guess I was really, really lucky. I was up fishing this past weekend. On Monday in a hurry to get to the creek I left my driver side car door wide open and my wallet on the seat with all credit cards, etc. I was fishing for a least a couple of hours when a women came up and ask if I owned the Tahoe. She said the door was open and credit cards all over. I rushed back to the car only to find that the door was indeed wide open but my wallet and everything was in take. She said that another person was also there and he commented but did not want to touch anything. To bad everyone is not that honest.

Both Monday (the holiday) afternoon and Friday morning I have seen suspicous characters at the Island parking lot and at access 5.  Remember to make sure the windows are up and doors are locked.  That's about the best you can do, especially since I can't remeber the last time I've seen a patrol car on the higway.

There was a blue sedan parked all the way onto the parking area this morning. I thought it was odd that someone would park up by the trees but I didn't notice anyone inside (didn't look either). I think The closer you park to the road the better. Sorry to hear about this.

Phil that really sucks, you know I sometimes fantasize about catching some scumbag in the act of breaking into my vehicle but quickly come to the realization that going to prison for applying a little justice would be a bummer.Fortunately it's been years since I've heard of a break in I too hope this isn't a new trend. We all should be more aware of suspicious vehicles and people maybe even taking licence plate #s or even pictures since most of us carry cameras. And not carrying valuables or if you have them hide them as best you can so as not to make you're car a tempting target. One more little secret....now I'm not recommending this or suggesting this BUT from what I've been told by many law enforcement personel that I am friends with ,is carrying a loaded conceald firearm is only a misdemeanor but on the otherhand carrying a conceald fix bladed knife I believe 6" or larger is a felony! Go figure.Something to consider if you are a law abiding citizen and are up to date in gun laws and especially are responsible enough to SAFELY OPERATE a firearm. Now shooting somebody or even pulling out a weapon in a non life threatening situation is not a smart thing, but I've heard a few stories of fishermen being badly beaten and robbed right at the place they were fishing(not @ Putah)And one older gentleman in Sacramento was beaten so bad by 3 other individuals that he gradually slipped into a coma but not before explaining what took place.Just something I thought I'd throw out there, good or bad ....think about it.

Hey Greg,

Do you remember Jim and Donna from Vaca High days?

I was up at Putah years ago with Jim sitting down on the side of the creek enjoying the view (yeah yeah thats it) and had some crackhead come up behind us with a recurve bow at full draw. He started ranting that we were trying to kill him and was threatening to shoot us. Now he only had field tips, not broadheads, and there were two of us. Just the same that idiot could only hold that recurve back for so long before he started shaking. We managed to convince him we were NOT tryig to killhim and he took off through the brush

In all honesty if we had a handgun with us that idiot would have been DEAD as soon as he let his draw down.

As for guns and fishing. Leo had a nice German Shephard. Deliverence in the narrows. Big cats on the Pit....actually I worry more about people though. Multiple stab wound victim on the W. Walker and A few other occurances with armed individuals while fishing.

Think my wife would be ok with me owning a handgun

btw I'll beta concealed gun v concealed knife is different than brandishing a knife versus brandishing a gun

I spoke with an officer at Davis P.D. You do not have to have a concealed weapon permit
to carry a handgun. A shoulder harness worn outside would also deter some of the weird factor
as well. I just hope I don't start seeing guys packing 44 magnum long barrels out there.
I remember last fall, I fished till after dark and was getting out of my waders at access 5 when
a pickup drove in and stopped as it passed me. I was definately being assessed as a target. I have also had the same experience out at the lower Yuba. I does creep me out. I just think it
is too bad that sawed-off pump action 12 ga. shotguns are illegal. It would be handy at times.
