My buddy finally retired. We'll be heading up to his Dunsmuir cabin next week to fish the Upper Sacto and other rivers. Any body been up north lately? Any info would be appreciated.
Craig Nielson at Shasta Trout is the top guide up in that area. If you give him a call he will usually call you back even if you aren't being guided. August is usually a bad month, but if you can find some fast water and you fish up higher you will have some fun. The access right below Lake Siskiyou is best around this time. Fish late with a rusty spinner if you see fish sipping! Also if you want to drive a little farther you could get into some summer steelies on the Upper Klamath or Umpqua. There is also some pretty good fishing for planters around Dunsmuir. If in town make sure to stop by the Tad fay flyshop. www.shastatrout.com/fishing-reports Good luck out there!
The last TheFlyShop report on 8-11 had the McCloud blown out brown from Mud Creek runoff. It appears to be clearing, but I would call those guys first before going there.
I fished around Dunsmuir last month during the 100 degree heat wave. There were a lot of small wild fish and all the decent sized fish I caught were planters. Fishing is tough this time of year. If you go, I would go to the Cantara Loop which I missed, but heard it was best around there from the Ashland Fly Shop.
Although it isn't a river/creek, a great bet is Lewiston Lake if you want to tube it or rent a boat. I went there tubing with a friend a couple of weeks ago and the fishing was great for both of us. Small midges and woolly buggers were basically getting multiple grabs on almost every cast and some of the fish were nice 17-19" feral trout. Only a few callibaetis out. Best fishing middle of the day!

Have the weeds come back around the lake?
We fished the middle section of the lake and it was mostly silt and rock with a few weeds - not like the good old days - but the fishing was as good.
Finally returned yesterday. Had a great time. Talked to guides, The Fly Shop, and Bob at Ted Fey's and decided to stay and fish the upper Sacto around Dunsmuir. Drove down stream twice but it was very slow. Up stream from Dunsmuir thee was more action. Meanwhile, around Dunsmuir there were lot's of fish, mainly planters, but several of the dark natives. Some of the planters had good size to them. Main flies were a black stone (sz 8) and small Princes, PT's or Copper Johns. Fished early mornings to 11, from 12 to 2 or 3, and in the afternoons starting around 5 until 8. One interesting experience. My buddy has a wet suit and mask/snorkel. He waded and looked around in the water behind his cabin and both the neighbors. We were shocked at the number of fish he spotted holding in all the likely spots. Some spots only held 2 or 3 but there were from 4 to 8 fish holding in the larger holes.
