Anybody have anything to say about that piece of water??? Flows look lower coming out of Clear Lake...Any trout to be had????? Just cabin fever starting to make me think of other places.
I'm only relaying what I've been told, but Cache creek can provide some pretty good smallmouth bass fishing in certain areas, and I really believe the water is or will be too warm for trout.Due north of Cache Creek is Stoney creek and I went there a week ago just to scout around and possibly catch a few trout.Unfortunately due to the warm temps and the resulting snow melt from the higher peaks around there the water was off color and really high.If anybody out there knows more about this area please let me know.We saw lots of Tule elk and even a large heard of Buffalo!!I thought I was in Wyoming again!
Cache Creek is an amazing fishery. Try putting in at the USGS flow meter about a mile up from the main bridge before you hit the lake. This is where you'll most likely find 12-18 bows with some lunkers in the 22+ size in here. They like nymphs, fast water and you can often see them holding by rocks. The water clarity is usually very good.
What's nice about this stream is that the meat fishers tend to stay in the lake. The stream has quite a few places you can hit where you might see one set of footprints all summer.
Sadly, the Crazy Mullets w big guns also like this BLM area. Many a time I have been at the lower section in mid summer watching for gentle rises as big trout sip flies-only to hear the sudden bark of a gun (semi-auto, full auto), and the whinging of the round very close by. This is followed by a rebel yell. Kinda ruins your afternoon on the river.
Never the less, that's if you decide to fish closer to the lake. Good luck, great site, and if you decide to take one of these magnificent fish home you'll note the very "pink flesh" almost like salmon (I usually take at least one home each year).
PS: Let me know if you are going up in the next few weeks, wouldn't mind hitting it this spring.
Could you give some directions on how to get to cache creek? Is it cache creek or north fork cache creek along hwy 20 I have seen people fly fishing along hwy 20.
I am pleasantly surprised by the info Shark Diver posted on Cache Creek,WOW I really didnt know that water held trout! Please tell me more or even call me,I'm interested in going soon and being that it's not too far of a drive for me would be a nice option this time of year.
