I fished Putah Creek for the first time earlier today. Caught 5, but none bigger than about 12". Had a bit of adventure finding fishable water, but, once I did, it was a fun day.

What are your favorite sections to fish? I stopped at all of the open access points and pulled over on the shoulder a few other places. I was amazed at the amount of weeds in the water (not to mention the underbrush around the creek). After I lost a few flies to the weeds, I realized I needed to find the faster current and riffles.

Anyway, I had fun. It was a good day. I'm looking forward to fishing there again and finding better water.

I fished the creek yesterday too! Landed 4 measureable fish lost two more. Small end was 12 but i did land a beautiful 16 inch fish. I fished most of the acess points but what i found was that fish are holding in deep water. The deeper the better. I found great water that looked like it should hold fish with nothing in it, but as soon as I found good deep water I found myself hookin up with fish.

When you say deep water, how deep are we talking? And are we talking about the huge "lake" sections in between the access points, or are those always out of the question?

I almost exclusively fished riffles when I could, FWIW.

The shallowest i caught a fish at was 6ft. I don't fish the deep pond sections but I have herd sucess stories from those who do. I try to fish the tail outs. So my favorite spots include those that are come from a riffle or small rapid section  into a pool. However this is a preference. There are plenty of fish all over in the creek. Ive seen spin fisherman pull big fish out of fast riffle sections. Makes me think the best way to fish those sections is with a wolly bugger.

I think as the flows drop we'll start seeing more fish pushing up into shallower water but right now it seems that they are holding in pools. I fished one pool that held the majority of fish I caught. Caught 3 lost 2 out of the same hole. Next time I go im going to bring an underwater camera and see just how many fish are stacked up down there. I recently rea an article about fish and their ability to see color, in it it mentioned that they start to have limmited spectrum visibility as water gets deeper. The article also mentioned that fish can get sunburned (or at least too much sun can have a negtive affect on the fish)! They try to stay as low in the water colum as possible. It mentioned something about uv spectrums and how them diminish the deeper you go. So i tried to take that to heart and spend time fishing down near the bottom. Lots o weeds down there but the fish are there too.

sk1983 let me know the next time you go fish the creek on a weekend. I try to frequent the creek so there is a chance I will be going too.

Some more fish. I think they are all different fish. Sorry one is a bad picture, but my cameraman was still putting his waders on!
