It's been at least 10 years at least since I fished the creek in the summer time but after reading all the posts about how it used to be I decided to go today.

I had the place to myself except there was a Subaru parked at #5. I never saw the owner.

I noticed right away that there was a lot less trash everywhere. Same thing I noticed last winter but I was still surprised. Summer used to be trash time. My carryout bag was very light but I did manage to find a pull top Budwiser can. It must have been there for 30+ years.

I intended to use a sink tip and streamer set up for the high summer flows but wound up using a dry with dropper for some of the day and an EC caddis the rest.

I didn't expect much with the high water using this rig but did manage a lot of small bows.

I was impressed with the little ones. They were all fat healthy and full of fight.

More like like the fish on the Truckee or the upper Yuba.

Who burned the tree at access 5? That was a strange sight.

It's changed a lot yes but I think I'll be back for more when it cools off a bit. Cheers, Paul

I was out at access 5 on Thursday 8/22. I saw the same Subaru, ( I assume) and met the owner, He was out there spinning barbless stuff though riffles with decent success, just not my style. I was surprised to see that there wasn't too much trash out there as well but I did stumble across what seemed to be a popped raft or float of sometime just below the fork around the Island. Now normally I would have taken it out with me but it was deep in some blackberry bushes and I don't wanna poke any more holes in my waders than I probably already had no. Any ideas on how to pick it out of there?

Paul- did you manage to hook into any fish swinging the streamers? I tried that with no success (I have been fly fishing for years but I am still what should be considered a beginner and had never fished a streamer before) I would love a tip or two for fishing that section ( its hard to get advice or pointer in the right direction about fishing Putah in general)

I did manage 4 really small ( 6-8 inches)  fish nymphing under an indicator but I'm sure there is a better method fishing some of that faster water.

Leave the float until fall. Let the Black berry bush die back. Then send me a reminder and we can figure it out.

I didn't try the streamers. I have tried clousers and sculpin in the past but at winter flows it just didn't make much sense. That's when I usuall fish up there. I probably should have tried them with the conditions this week. I'll bet I would have done a lot better. Some time my brain gets stuck in dry fly gear.
Just like anything else up there you just have to play around until you get it. There is a board member who uses an pontoon boat to fish the slow, deep un-wadeable water with success. He uses sink tips and buggers and streamers. I haven't talked to Phil in a while but he might pipe in here. If I go next week I'll send a PM. But It's more likely going to be the Yuba.

Cheers. Paul

P.S. If Greg is guiding these days I would call him for at least a half day trip. Probably still the best way to get familiar with the creek.
