A couple questions for you
Permalink

Hey there,

I'm Craig and I am new to Putah Creek.  I have made a few trips recently and really enjoy the waters of Putah.  The tight quarters due to trees and brush remind me of my beloved Ozark waters, which after three months I miss tremendously!

Anyways, I had a question or two.  First off, I noticed some nice looking water close to the bottom of the dam while I was on top looking down.  Is this water ok to fish? Are you allowed too? And would I be wasting my time? It seems I would have to park in or stay overnight at the campground to have access to it...

Second, How do I upload an avatar for my profile? It shows the download happening, then nothing.

Any other random advice fly advice for Putah would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Craig

I thought the regs prohibit fishing within a certain distance of a dam, but this was all I could find.

2.35. TAKING FISH NEAR DAMS, FISHWAYS, SCREENS AND EGG-TAKING STATIONS.
No fish may be taken within 250 feet of:
(a) Any fishway or any egg-taking station.
(b) Any dam or any weir or rack which has a fishway or an egg-taking station.
(c) The upstream side of any fish screen.
Fish may be taken upstream or downstream from any dam that does not have a fishway or egg-taking station (this supersedes Section 5502 of the Fish and Game Code).

No need to stay at the campround.  Just hike up from the bridge and float from there if you have the means.  I DO NOT suggest trying to scale the cliff to get around the glory hole.  I have done that multiple times in the past when I was a kid and was lucky enough to not kill myself.  Over the years, many haven't been so lucky.  After awhile we wised up and just hiked down from the parking area at the top of the dam, signs, what signs?

I believe there is a no tresspass within 100 feet to the dam that is posted facing the water.

I have fished that section in my kayak many times and have had limited success. There is a deep pool downstream from the dam that is accessible by hiking a trail leading from the parking lot next to the bridge (on the right when passing Canyon Creek Resort).  Find the trail leading upstream direction from the parking lot. You need to cross over the dry creek to catch the other side. You will parachain the inside of a chain link fence. The gate at the far side has always been open in my experience. Pass the gate and the pool will be on your right.

I have heard of people having success from belly boats in there with a deep nymphing rig. Might try stripping some large streamers in there as well.  Deeper the better.

Years ago I caught a couple of fish on the concrete slab at the base of the Glory Hole. The ugliest Brown I've ever seen was caught by a friend of mine at the base of the dam. The fish was roughly 24", didn't have a spot on it and was caught just feet from the dam.

Didn't you post the regs that said it was against the law to fish within 250 feet of a dam?

 b) Any dam or any weir or rack which has a fishway or an egg-taking station.  By the way, this was roughly 30 years ago
