Shad fishing on the Yuba River.

Had a fun day yesterday with my friend Link.  Lot's of hookups and consistent action although there were no huge pods of fish.  I would guess that we connected with close to 60 shad.  I even hooked a monster fish that I think was a 10+lb steelhead that took me 100yds into the backing.  Had a great fight, then the fish popped the 8lb tippet!disbelief

Here's a video:

If any of you like catching shad or just want to practice your steelhead double-haul, now's the time to get out to the Yuba!

Did you see the fish?  My bet is a striper, ive hooked a few on the lower Y while shad fishing or trout fishing this time of the year before

Just saw the fish roll about 50 yrds down river.  It definitely was long and meaty, but it seemed a lot faster than a striper as the line was peeling off my reel.  Still, it could have been although the biggest striper I've ever caught on a shad fly was 15" long.  IMO, this mystery fish was well over 30".

After looking at the 8lb tippet I believe the leader was weakened by catching a lot of shad and it parted close to the knot.  The moral is: don't be careless.

Stripers peel line pretty quick in shallow water.  Could also have been a salmon, lots of jacks entering the system already.  Cool video by the way.
