Well I couldn't decide where to fish on the opener and read a report on Kienes that the Upper Sac was fishing well.  Flows were very low for this time of the year at 800 cfs.  High by some standards, but very fishable.  Looked down low and saw several fish rising around noon.  Headed upstream and found some fishy water.  Within the first few casts hooked a nice fish.  Caught one more in the cable hole.  Some guys from Redding showed up and I handed off the spot to them.  Headed upstream and saw some redds with no fish on them.  Hooked into a fish that nearly put me into the backing.  Wrong side of the river. Crossed over and landed a few more.  Not a ton of fish landed, but big fish by Upper Sac standards.  Even landed a fish on a dry fly.  March Browns, BWOs, Yellow Stones and the old Rubberlegs.  Sims campground is free right now so head on up.  I am off to one of the North Forks next weekend.

I'm headed up there in a couple weeks. You have any pointers and some starting areas? I've never fished this river before and will only have a weekend to figure it out.

As with all waters you need to check the flow charts. I use the american fly fishing web site. it is pretty good. Flows at Delta are much higher as it is down near lake Shasta. When the snow on Shasta starts melting it will be all over... Since I don't fish the Upper Sac that much and if you do a search you will find some very good fishing around Conant. Right now the area is fishing like the old Pitt. High stick bobber fishing. If you know how to fish without a bobber that is the way the locals fish it. If you are having any trouble or if you really want the inside info go to the Tad Flay shop in Dunsmuir. I met Wayne Eng on the river on Saturday and he said Salmonflies are hatching in town!! Some of the greatest fishing is throwing big stimis to the trout. Some other local flies are Eng Thengs and Bombers also available at the Tad Flay shop.

The river is in great shape. It fished typical of my few previous experiences their. Work hard, lots of walking. I fished only dry's for 2 days, Did ok, Average 10 to 12 inchers, One 17. Salmon fly's are over, Golden stones just starting. It was a bug buffet, Some of everything. I fully intend to figure this river out. It's a challenging river, I like that. Dosen't help its one of the most bueatiful in nor. cal. in my opinion.

I was going to head up this weekend but I figure the crowds would be large. I'm headed to Truckee instead. Hopefully it's not too bad.
