Fished 6 hours yesterday on the Russian.  The water has a little green tint with about a foot of visability.  It is as high as I've fished it in the last few years.  No hookups for fishing  for 6 hours.  Very bright sun yesterday.

Pretty similar to my story on Saturday Ed.  But I did get a good bump 3 hours into my day.  It's been beautiful over here lately.  434 fish at the hatchery last week which seems really low to me for this time of year.  Could be wrong about that though.  Of course there are natives that swim here too.  3 or so weeks ago I was in 'em,  swinging right through a pile of fish with no grabs.  I'ts been spotty and frustrating, but spey casting this new switch rod is pretty damn addictive and keeping me motivated.  Better luck next time....

It was a great day to be out.  I felt like a cave bear, with the sunlight hurting my eyes.

I am going to the Russian for the first time next week. Any advice? Was going to start at the Wholer Bridge by Windsor. Any redds I should be aware of up there?

Thanks

Not any I know of in that stretch.  It's not like the American with dishes of redds stacked on top of each other

Wohler Bridge is a good place to start.

There aren't any steelhead redds in the main channel AFAIK.  Since the Russian often floods horribly during the winter any steelhead that spawns in the main channel is doomed to extinction.  The tributaries are off limits.

That's true.  Many of the fish in the Russian (talking wild fish here) spawn in the many feeder creeks tribs.  Don't know if I can honestly say I have seen a redd with fish on it out here.  I have done many floats with my buddies in our toons last couple years.  If I didn't work right on the banks of this river and had to travel to fish it I would go right past it to other places.  But there are some big mean winter fish in this river and that's why I fish it.

The last time I was at Wohler there was a sign saying you need a fishing pass. Can the locals tell us what that involves? I can't remember who was requiring the pass.

I think the pass is to get a key to the gate for people drifting the river.

My buddy has a key.  I can ask him about it.  I think it gets you into multiple gates on the river not just the one at wohler.
