In the market for a pontoon. But I keep hearing how great kayaks are. Can any of you share your thoughts and experiences on these two. Areas fished would be rivers, such as the american or yuba and obviously lakes and ponds.
I don't own either but I think you would be hard pressed to tip over a pontoon. Now a kayak is probably a different story. Getting in and out of a kayak and gear storage are other issues. You would be sitting a lot lower (thinking of casting) in a kayak as well.
I don't recall ever seing somebody flyfish from a kayak on a river.

I have a Creek Company pontoon boat and I love it, much better price than other brands, but just as solid. Never used it on Putah but have drifted the Russian for Smallmouth and Steelhead lots of fun! Make sure you get one with a anchor system.
I totally agree with Mr Lightfoot about the pontoon kayak issue,I have a fish cat and I love it.I use it for streams and rivers and for conveinience I use my float tube also a fish cat for most lakes, its just eisier to transport and set up than the pontoon. Now if any yall thinkin bout takin anything down good ol Putah,DONT DO IT!!!! Very very dangerous especially during the higher flows, putah is class 5 during the summer months pretty much non-navigable due to numerous sweeps. In the winter months there is really no need to float it anyway cause the entire creek is accessable. Now if you want to fish some of the bigger wide slow water areas either a float tube or pontoon works fine just dont get sucked into the fast water areas.
I have a kayak for fishing and have been using it for two years. Its a sit on top. Its very easy to get on, just straddle it and sit down. Unless you lean way over it is very stable. It is very easy to manuver and can be set up for the bay, delta, lake or river. My is an Ocean Kayak that is 15 feet long. It weighs about 55 pounds. If interested there are several web sites you can consult.
I picked up a cople of these kayaks from Walmart last summer. A friend and I used them at Dillon Beach near Bodega Bay and they worked great. Yes we got wet but they floated like a shark attractor and despite getting broadsided by plenty of waves we never came close to capsizing.
Oh yea after a days use they serve another purpose.
