Made my way up to the Trinity twice last month in hopes for some fresh fish, nice weather, and no crowds. the first trip in the middle of the month gave up just that, the second only gave up fresh fish, it got cold/wet/croded. With 2 rods ready to go, a swinger and a indicator, truck packed to live in for 3 days it was on.
Started out in my old faithful spot around J.C. and landed a sweet wild steelhead in the first 2 hours. Stoked! THis is an indicator hole and I really wanted to spend more time swinging and even maybe skating flies this trip so I forced myself to leave and move on to better swinging water,so downstream I go. Get to a spot that looks great, swung thru down the run nothing. Grabbed the indicator rod to hit a couple juicy looking spots in the run and sure enough Fish on!! Frickin indicators are lethal. This happened alot in the course of both trips.
Everday was great I caught lots of fish overall, 16 adults landed outta 6 days some were so strong and the jumps they gave up made it ridiculous, I fished my arms off every single day and it payed off. I explored and caught fish in new spots which is as valuable and rewarding as anything. Got a few on the swing and even turned one over skating late one warm evening which was as exciting as it gets. The old indicator killed it tho, I cant help but bring that darn thing down to the hole. Fished from before sunrise to after sunset from below Del Loma to above Junction City using October Caddis to Copper Johns and a few others in between. Go and have fun!
Hell yeah Matt. Nice to see someone puttin in work out there. Great pics. One thing I know it's a big river and finding new spots can be fun. I hooked a fish up there my first trip that I lost on a quigley crown jewel. She came straight outta the water like a space shuttle and threw it back in my face. Went back the next time and for the life of me couldn't find that same tailout, but there's always fishy water around the next turn. Sweeeet.
Thanks for the report and sweet pictures ! I had planned to hit the Rogue but its slowed down... Just curious, did you leave your rods out and camp? I've read a report on another forum that where the guy had two rods stolen overnight. I've always camped at Steiner Flats and had no issues.
Guy that got his rods stolen was another buddy of mine. He doesn't really post on any boards but thought he would try to get some help on Kiene's in case anybody saw anything. Can't be too careful out there especially as many tweakers are running around in that canyon. Once again nice pics Matt.
Yeah, I'll be locking mine up in my truck, I just worry about leaving my crap around camp. Hopefully your buddy gets his stuff back. Should I catch some clown stealing stuff he/she will surely get a good wood shampoo! Now to figure out whether to fish around JC or up near Lewiston....
