Long time follower and just stumbled on this post and my heart dropped! I felt like I need to drive out to the Stan right now with a bucket and ladder and start a rescue operation. There is a fisheries research and conservation organization many may have heard of called FISHBIO which is a world renowned organization in the business of sustaining and protecting fisheries. I have seen them on the lower Stan conducting surveys in the past. They have a field office in Oakdale! I emailed them in regards to the wild trout stranded in the canal and asked if there was any way they could help. I hope to hear something back from them.
Went fishing on the lower stan today as I was walking up to the dam below Lake Tulloch on the gravel trail next to the canal I noticed that there was no water in the canal. Its usually pretty full depending on the time of year. There were to Long puddles about 6 inches deep with about 150 nice sized trout in there stranded! They were swimming around in circles looking for a way out. I think they have a few days left before the water is gone or an animal or birds gets them. The problem is there is no way down unless somewhere were to bring a ladder and a net. You would also need a bucket full of water to transport them to the main river. There other problem would be if the dam operator opened up the valve for water to go in the canal while you are in their. That would not end well. Any thoughts on what to do to save these fish?
In case you havent been there and you want to try and help these fish they are about 200 yards down from the dam in the canal. BTW the fishing was average at best
I have a call into a local fisheries biologist to see if they can help. I believe the canal is owned by OID. Oakdale Irrigation District. They are probably working on the canal to fix the many leaks. I have never seen a fish in there, but it sounds like there are quite a few. I will see if I can get a number for OID. There are two canals. Is it the canal closest to the road? The canal on the other side is owned by another irrigation district.
I just called OID and they said they turned off the water as the irrigation season is over. Also asked if they had a biologist to monitor the stranding of fish and he said no, not our problem, the raccoons will get them and that will be that??? If you want to harass them call 209-988-3750
Thanks for following up, yes its the canal closest to the road, the one that you cross on the footbridge. I never thought there were any fish in there either I was shocked to see so many fish. Hopefully something can be done soon. I would gladly help if someone has any ideas.

Hi Everyone- Richard got me to read this strand and I am concerned as well! I called the number for FISBIO you guys kindly posted and talked to a guy who works in one of their offices. He was very nice and said they did not yet know about it but said he will try to round up some volunteers this morning and get down there....he also took my number and said he would call me back! So.......I'm praying they will do that and maybe we can check up on it later today. Is there anyone who lives closer to that area who could go and help??
Thanks so much for posting this and the contact number!!

So after following up with FISHBIO with an email I received a response from Doug Demko and He replied "thanks for the heads up I have someone heading out there right now to see what can be done". This organization is pretty cool!
So Doug Demko from FISHBIO just contacted me via email and informed me that they recovered and relocated 66 WILD TROUT!! He was highly appreciative and said don't hesitate to contact him if anything like this happens again. I believe these fish actually most likely came out of Goodwin reservoir so he didn't specify if they were placed into the river or returned to the reservoir. I feel like justice was served in this little situation and I will actually be contacting some folks along Goodwin reservoir who run a lodge style vacation rental for flyfishing on Goodwin reservoir and hopefully we can lobby a solution to get Oakdale Irrigation district to fix the problem.
That is Great News!!! I really appreciate everyone on this board who made this happen. Yesterday when I was fishing I didnt really enjoy it because my mind was on those stranded trout. I guess fisherman do exagerate I said 150 trout I guess more like 66 LOL
LOL! When I contacted FISHBIO I told them it was several dozen fish stranded just in case of exageration! but none the less 66 wild trout is a pretty big number! It's pretty awesome that FISHBIO jumped on this and recovered those fish in a prompt and timely manner. Thank you edog7 for posting the situation.
