So I just found out Lance Gray is doing a "Putah creek class" coming up in December?? Claims to be teaching about seasons, hatches, access points etc. Greg or Steve know about this? Why is he doing it in the worst time of year to be out there, not to mention the access points are mostly untouchable in the high summer flows??
As you have said Lance is a good guide. I am sure he will be telling his clients where they can fish to avoid spawning fish. He has fished the creek for more years than most of us..
When will people learn to just leave the creek alone in the winter. Give the fish a break, how hard is that. Why not have a class in summer? Or now in the fall or next spring. Why the winter!? Why? Why? Why? I'll never understand. I'll beat this dead horse tell it turns into a fossil.
I said it last year....steelhead season is here. Trinity-Klamath are popping right now. Why not focus on some real fish of a life time instead of these poor soldiers at Putah.
Frickin tour, F that. I remember a post on Kienes site from a rookie who went on the American River steelhead tour last year. Boy it was a good read. Maybe I'll try to dig it up.
Here's that post from last year. Would of been nice if the "tour guides" let the anglers know that fish spawn in this particular area.
I spotted a pod of 3-5 fish in a spot we checked out last weekend. On my second drift I got hit by the largest in the group, he took me on a few good runs only to jump off a few minutes later. I watched the water and saw him go back to the group and start feeding again. I tied on a different nymph and on my first drift through the pod he hit again taking me under a snag and breaking off. Tied a new rig up and drifted through the run again and after a few I hooked up again only to pe pulled straight to the snag and broke off again. After a new rig and a few more casts I get another hit and I'm hooked up good this time. It lasted about 10min max and a nice fat 25" hatchery(would have been great to get a wild but I'm not going to complain) fish came to the net. I was stoked, my first good size Steelie on the fly, I went with Lance Gray last weekend on the Valley Steelhead Tour, learned a bunch and it payed off.
I'm no expert but I can't recall ever hooking a fish and losing it only to watch it go back and start feeding with it's buddies again. I think that big buck might of been wanting to go hang out with his girl ON THE REDD!!!!
Only 2 spots left for the creek tour anybody want to join me ! ! !
